The Hottest Week 6 Teams in College Football

John RozumOct 8, 2011

Getting on a hot streak is clutch in college football, especially with the inexact science that is the BCS formula.

And after six weeks of football, there's clearly more than a few teams who are full of confidence.

So to begin, here are five schools who are currently feeling the hottest, but be sure to periodically check back as a few more will be added as Saturday's games conclude.

Oregon Ducks

1 of 11

Despite the injury to running back LaMichael James, the Oregon Ducks have been thrashing opponents since the Week 1 loss to LSU.

Oregon has ripped off four straight wins, averaged 56 points with each win, and has only allowed 18.25 points during that stretch.

The Pac-12 better watch out because the loss to LSU clearly motivated them, and Oregon isn't ready to get knocked off the conference pedestal just yet.

They've been playing with a renewed confidence and they're not slowing down.

Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 11

Sure the Wisconsin Badgers are on a bye this week, but that still doesn't change the fact that they're easily one of college football's hottest teams.

Quarterback Russell Wilson is a Heisman candidate, the Badgers are ranked in the Top Five in both polls, and have won each game by an average margin of 38 points.

The welcoming party for Nebraska into the Big Ten is what put Madison, WI. over the edge and the Badgers a for sure national title candidate.

They have a Top Ten overall defense, a Top Ten rushing offense, and an efficient passing offense.

This may be the only team that can stay hot despite being on a bye-week, they're that good.

Boise State Broncos

3 of 11

After slowing down a bit against the Nevada Wolfpack, the Boise State Broncos completely thwacked the Fresno State Bulldogs in Fresno, CA. 57-7.

It's going to be interesting how they play against formidable Mountain West opponents in TCU, Air Force, and San Diego State, but based on their 5-0 record, Top Six ranking, and the consistent play of Heisman-hopeful QB Kellen Moore, Boise isn't going to lose this season.

Expect them to dominate from here on out, because they know their only shot at a national title is to shred opponents, then possibly finish No. 3 or 4 in the BCS before the conference championships commence.

There, is where they'll need help.

Oklahoma Sooners

4 of 11

After the hiccup game where the Sooners were scared by the Missouri Tigers at home, despite winning that game 38-28, Oklahoma looked vulnerable.

Well, the following week the Oklahoma dismantled Ball State 62-6 (yeah it's Ball State, but still) and then carried that momentum into The Red River Rivalry versus Texas.

There, the Sooners just totally annihilated the Longhorns from the start and didn't let up.

So to that end, not only are the Sooners on fire, but they're still the best the Big 12 has to offer until further notice.

Clemson Tigers

5 of 11

When you start the season unranked, defeat three consecutive ranked opponents, and have the third of those three be Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, you're on fire.

That win over the Hokies wasn't a barn-burner, it was a 23-3 shut-down and sound performance by the now ACC front-runner.

This week for Clemson is at home pummeling Boston College from the outset, so barring a complete meltdown the Tigers will remain undefeated and ranked in the Top Ten.

The game against Georgia Tech in late October will be one of the biggest games of the year, and that could also be a preview of the 2011 ACC championship game.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

6 of 11

It was a close one, but the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets held on to win 21-16 over the Maryland Terrpins on Saturday.

Now, although it was not as convincing of a win as some of their college football and undefeated brethren, the Yellow Jackets are now 6-0.

Also, coming close to being upset by a vastly inferior team should spark Georgia Tech enough to pick up the pace.

Nonetheless, they rank No. 1 in rushing offense and points per game, so it will be tough beating a team that knows how to run the football and score the way Tech does on a consistent basis.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

7 of 11

As I write this the Oklahoma State Cowboys are up on the Kansas Jayhawks 49-7 with just over four minutes to play in the first half.

Now of course this is Kansas and we're not talking basketball, but putting up 35 points in one quarter is insane, just look at what the Oklahoma Sooners did to the Texas Longhorns.

And if there's a year in which Oklahoma State can win the Big 12, as well as compete for a national title, 2011 is the year.

It all started with the crucial road win over Texas A&M in College State, TX. and the Cowboys have been rolling on a weekly basis.

Of course they must best the Sooners if they want to achieve anything that will earn them a championship, but regardless, Oklahoma State has caught fire NBA Jam style.

LSU Tigers

8 of 11

Even though it's only halftime in their game against the Florida Gators as this slide gets added, the LSU Tigers are giving their No. 1 case more emphasis with a 24-3 lead.

And the Gators are no slouch either, as evidence by the quick start they had against Alabama last week, but the Bayou Bengals are proving to be the country's best team.

Heading into this game LSU was winning their games by an average score of 38-12, but there's a good chance that when they travel to Tuscaloosa, AL. and play the Crimson Tide on November 5, the Tigers will have significantly increased their dominance.

Having talent, skill, and teamwork is one thing, but being able to rely on anyone at anytime can put a team way over the edge, and the Tigers have that kind of depth which is downright unreal.

Now, although it's still too early to compare this team to some of the best in the history of college football, the complete and all-encompassed performance that coach Les Miles' team puts on display each week, the 2011 LSU Tigers could very well enter that conversation by season's end.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

9 of 11

The 0-2 start was pretty rough to swallow if you're an Irish fan, and especially after how Notre Dame finished off the 2010 campaign with a four-game win streak as well as a sound victory over Miami in the Sun Bowl.

That being said however, head coach Brian Kelly has gotten his team to refocus and is currently throttling the Air Force Falcons 49-16 toward the end of the third quarter.

This win will increase Notre Dame's win streak to four games, a record of 4-2, and has two weeks to prepare for hated-rival USC with a bye coming up next week.

If the Irish can slow down Matt Barkley and company on October 22, watch out because this team could then potentially finish 9-3 or 10-2 as the Stanford Cardinal await in the regular season finale.

Illinois Fighting Illini

10 of 11

Who would have thought that the Illinois Fighting Illini would be 6-0 right now?

Well, anyone not directly affiliated with the football program sure had reason not to believe that as evidence by the Illini's 3-9 record in 2009 and 7-6 record in 2010.

But thus has not been the case so far in 2011 and Illinois could very well be 9-0 before they play host to the Michigan Wolverines on November 12.

The next three weeks could reveal the true colors of Ron Zook's team though, as they play Ohio State at home, then at Purdue and Penn State in consecutive weeks.

If the Illini get through that an reach 9-0, they're going to have a sick amount of confidence heading into the final stretch of the year.

And regardless of how the season plays out, it's for certain the Zook is off the hot seat for now, and that 2011 is going to be a solid year for the Illini to say the least.

Kansas State Wildcats

11 of 11

Much like the Clemson Tigers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Illinois Fighting Illini, and Michigan Wolverines, the Kansas State Wildcats began the season unranked, but found themselves ranked heading into Week 6.

That said, the Wildcats kept rolling and are now 5-0 with a 24-17 over the Missouri Tigers.

Perhaps last week was the game that really increased the confidence of coach Bill Snyder's team though, when they defeated the No. 15 ranked Baylor Bears 36-35.

They averted themselves from the hangover loss this week, and now could potentially be 7-0 heading into the Oklahoma game on Oct. 29.

And regardless of what happens versus the Sooners, the Wildcats may very well finish the regular season 9-3 or 10-2.

It would certainly make a case that the Big 12 needs to stick around, because having another solidly ranked school adds to their depth along with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Baylor.

Nonetheless, the Wildcats are flying under the radar amidst all the other undefeated teams, so be sure to watch out for them because this team is much better than advertised.
