BCS Rankings 2011: Boise State and 5 Teams Destined to Get Screwed
There have been complaints every year since the BCS ranking system came into existence.
Everyone, all the way up to the President of the United States, has given their opinion on the system with many crying for a playoff system to be implemented.
This is just wishful thinking. As long as there is still a huge profit to be made from bowl games, the current system is here to stay.
With that comes the gripes and problems.
It seems like every year there is at least one team who is screwed out of a chance to play in the National Championship.
Sometimes there is more than one team.
Here are five teams that are destined to be screwed by the BCS in the 2011 season.
Wisconsin Badgers
1 of 5If Wisconsin gets duped out of a title shot, it would be an absolute outrage.
The Badgers are completely dominating the opposition and as of right now they are sitting pretty with a 5-0 record. They are ranked third in the nation in scoring offense and second in the nation in scoring defense.
Looking at their schedule, there is nobody that should stand in their way for a National Championship berth.
Illinois, Michigan State and Ohio State are the only teams worth mentioning. Then of course, there is the Big Ten Championship game.
But, even if Wisconsin wins out they could be screwed.
LSU and Alabama are both staring at undefeated seasons. After the two face each other in November, the winner will likely go unbeaten and finish the season first in the nation.
Oklahoma has only Oklahoma State standing in their way. If they can knock off the Cowboys a second place finish is all but guaranteed.
So where does that leave Wisconsin if they go undefeated?
In third.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
2 of 5Let's go back to that scenario that was just mentioned: the LSU-Alabama face off. The winner likely goes undefeated and finishes first in the country.
Now let's assume that Oklahoma State pulls off a miraculous upset over Oklahoma in the final game of the regular season.
Even with the win, Oklahoma State would likely be on the outside looking in with an undefeated schedule.
Wisconsin has an easy path to an unbeaten season as well. If they do succeed, then the Cowboys will still be ranked behind the SEC winner and the Badgers.
Stanford Cardinal
3 of 5Stanford faces one opponent during the rest of the season who could give them a run for their money in Oregon.
If Andrew Luck and the Cardinal triumph over the Ducks, then all signs point towards an unbeaten season.
Despite this, there are still plenty of teams standing in their way with chances that are just as likely.
LSU, Alabama, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have legitimate chances at going undefeated.
LSU and Alabama face each other. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State face each other. Both winners will likely finish undefeated.
Wisconsin has an easy path to an unbeaten record as well.
Even if Stanford can muster up a win against the Ducks, it looks like there will be three teams ahead of them sitting in even better positions.
Clemson Tigers
4 of 5The Clemson Tigers are the rising dark horses for this season.
After five weeks they are sitting at a 5-0 record, and face a mediocre Boston College team later today. Likely at 6-0 by the end of the day, Clemson is the undefeated team being overlooked.
The Tigers have taken out three ranked opponents thus far. Florida State, Auburn and Virginia Tech were no match for the potent offense in Clemson.
Clemson will still have to get past Georgia Tech and South Carolina. They will also have to win the ACC Championship game.
With the way the Tigers have looked, don't count them out.
But yet again, the dark horse will be overlooked.
Even if they do finish undefeated Clemson still won't get the respect from the BCS that schools like Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama and Wisconsin will get.
Clemson needs to keep on winning, and need to pray for the top teams to lose. They won't overtake them by just going undefeated.
Boise State Broncos
5 of 5It's really difficult to not feel bad for Boise State.
Ever since their 43-42 overtime victory over Oklahoma in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl they have had the country's attention.
The Broncos finished that season 13-0. In 2008 they finished 12-1. In 2009 they finished 14-0. Last year they went 12-1.
This year the Broncos are sitting at a 5-0 record after yesterday's 57-7 stomping of Fresno State.
There is absolutely nobody on the schedule that will stop Boise State this year. TCU is their toughest opponent remaining, and the Horned Frogs are not the same team they have been in recent years.
Kellen Moore and Boise State are going to finish the season with a 12-0 record, their third undefeated season in five years.
They have yet to be invited to the National Championship game. This year will be no different.
There are plenty of undefeated teams remaining.
LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Clemson, Michigan, Georgia Tech and a few more teams are still unbeaten.
If just two of these teams finish the year undefeated, Boise State is going to get the short end of the stick. Again.
It's a shame, because this is likely the best Boise State team in the history of the program.
