Texas vs Oklahoma: 5 Halftime Adjustments the Longhorns Need to Make
Texas' inexperience has been exposed in the first half of the Red River rivalry. Here are five adjustments the Longhorns need to make to get back in this game.
Pass Defense
Bob Stoops and the pass-happy Sooners offense don’t seem to have much interest in running the ball. Unfortunately, Heisman candidate Landry Jones gets to throw to two of the best wide receivers in college football.
Texas defense will need to prevent the dynamic duo of Kenny Stills and Ryan Broyles from breaking this thing wide open. Looks like its time for some two-safety defensive sets.
Maturity on Offense
The Longhorns need to grow up fast in the second half. They are going to need to execute in order to keep this from becoming embarrassing.
Boise State Magic
Texas’ first-year offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin has beat the Sooners before when he led uber-underdog Boise State past the big bad Sooners in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.
Harsin’s willingness to break out the trick plays has been on display early and often in the first half. If Texas is going to get back in this game, they are going to have to hit on a few.
The Statue of Liberty has worked pretty well in 2007.
Turnovers
Texas needs a big play. The young Horns are not good enough to go blow for blow with a more polished Sooners team. They will need a momentum shifting turnover or two to keep this thing close.
Play Calling
Oklahoma’s defense is more physical and more experienced than Texas’ young offense. If the Horns are going to have a shot in the second half, the Texas coaches are going to have to roll the dice on both sides of the ball.
