UFC 136: What Must Frankie Edgar Do to Beat Gray Maynard?
Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard will finally face each other one more time as they prepare to headline UFC 136 in a highly anticipated rematch for the UFC lightweight title.
Both competitors are familiar with each other, as they have met on two previous occasions. Their first bout saw Maynard walk away with the victory, while their second encounter ended in an underwhelming draw.
Edgar made considerable improvement in his game against Maynard in their rematch at UFC 125. He used his speed to move in and out of the pocket as he picked and timed his shots, while also preventing Maynard from utilizing his wrestling skills. Not to mention, their back-and forth bout saw Edgar display tremendous heart.
As momentum is favourably on Edgar's side, considering he still retained the title despite the unanimous draw, expect him to execute a similar game plan against Maynard.
One of the things Edgar was able to do so well was dictate the pace with his footwork and striking. Edgar consistently found his range inside the pocket and countered Maynard with a one-two combo as he circled away from his left hook. Edgar will want to maintain that same activity and constantly keep Maynard a step behind him to pick him apart and tire him out.
Edgar cannot maintain a lot of distance against a powerful wrestler like Maynard, and he needs to close the distance so that he is able to find his range. Maynard is a great wrestler who also possesses a lot of upper body strength. He will unquestionably look to clinch as often as he can with Edgar to wear him down and set up a takedown. Edgar needs to be aware of that, so he will have to utilize quick footwork and constantly move in and out of the pocket.
Edgar's footwork and superior striking will be key parts of his victory on Saturday night. He does not boast the same power Maynard has, but he certainly has the technique and hand speed that will overwhelm and frustrate his opponent on the feet. Edgar's scrambling ability will also help him prevent this bout from becoming a grappling contest, which will allow him to keep the bout in his comfort zone and utilize his striking to earn a unanimous decision.
