Texas vs. Oklahoma: 3 Matchups to Keep an Eye on in Red River Rivalry
This weekend marks the 106th meeting in the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma.
This is, however, only the second time in the last seven years that both teams will be meeting with undefeated records.
Oklahoma has slipped to No. 3 in the nation despite winning all of their games thus far, and No. 11 Texas has been climbing the rankings with each win.
This weekend will give insight to how the Big 12, and perhaps the race for the National Championship will turn out for each team.
Here are three key match-ups to keep an eye on during the game.
1. Defensive Turnovers
Oklahoma and Texas have both keyed in on getting turnovers to dominate on the defensive side of the ball this season.
Oklahoma forced four turnovers last week in their 62-6 stomping of Ball State last week.
Texas had three takeaways in the first half of their game, which led to a 37-14 win over Iowa State.
Both defenses are ranked in the top 15 in the nation. It's the one who walks away with the big play turnovers who will win tomorrow.
2. Texas' Inexperienced Quarterbacks
Sophomore Case McCoy and freshman David Ash have both looked great for Texas in their limited time as quarterback.
It's unclear at this point who will be the primary quarterback this weekend. They will likely keep the rotation going during the game.
It's important that both McCoy and Ash remain poised for the entire game.
One mistake and things could fall apart quickly. These inexperienced quarterbacks will need to play like veterans against this Oklahoma defense.
3. Whaley vs. Texas Run Defense
The Oklahoma Sooners have relied heavily on Landry Jones and the passing game this season.
Their running game, although not poor, has not been fantastic. This is the one aspect of the game where it appears Texas has the advantage.
Dominique Whaley has rushed for 379 yards and seven touchdowns over four games.
The Texas defense has played the run well all season.
They will still have to deal with Jones, but if the Longhorns can force the Sooners to be one dimensional, they could have chances for an upset.
