NFL Predictions Week 5: Calvin Johnson and 3 WRs Good for 2-Plus TDs

John RozumOct 7, 2011

Although NFL offenses are becoming more and more geared toward throwing the rock, WRs who score multiple TDs per game is rare because QBs are becoming so fluid in spreading the football around.

And rightfully so, because it's more difficult to stop multiple targets than just one or two.

That being said, however, there are three WRs in Week 5 who will score at least twice, because not only are they the best target on their team, but they're much better than their opponent.

Calvin Johnson, Detroit (vs Bears)

So far this season Calvin Johnson has scored eight TDs, and does have exactly two in each game.

He also has 321 yards on 24 receptions, which is obviously leading the Lions.

In addition, Detroit hosts NFC North rival Chicago on Monday night, where the Bears have the No. 29 and No. 23 ranked pass and rush defense, respectively.

Regardless of who's covering him, even if it's a double team from solid defenders in Charles Tillman, Brandon Meriweather and/or Chris Harris, the Bears won't be able to isolate Megatron.

Johnson can out-leap anyone, and is quicker, faster and accelerates better than any Chicago defender.

The only way Calvin won't score two-plus TDs in this game is if QB Matthew Stafford neglects to target him two times.

Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona (at Vikings)

Right now the Arizona Cardinals are desperate for a win even though they're in the NFL's weakest division.

And although the Vikings are also in the need of a win, the Cardinals and Larry Fitzgerald have dropped three straight.

Luckily for Fitz however, not only are the Vikings lacking the ability to play a full game, but their pass defense ranks No. 28 in the league.

So, we know the Cards' will move the ball on them, and once in the red-zone the only play should be a fade route for Larry Arizona to go up and get it.

If QB Kevin Kolb gets into the red-zone twice and does this, Arizona will win because that's their best shot at scoring, and especially when the defense stiffen up when backed up.

However, if that doesn't happen, the Cards' could very well drop a fourth straight because their defense isn't going to slow down RB Adrian Peterson.

Wes Welker, New England (vs Jets)

Until Wes Welker actually gets stopped, he's going to continue to slice opposing defenses.

He's easily QB Tom Brady's favorite target (56 targets, 40 receptions, 616 yards, five TDs), and shows no signs of slowing down.

And even if he does slow down, all Brady will do is get him back on track and begin the domination again.

This week against the Jets, although New York has a solid pass defense that's ranked No. 2, they're rush defense is No. 27.

So anticipate Welker starting off slow as New England establishes the running game first, and even as a decoy in passing situations early on, thereafter however, he will begin to takeover the game as the Pats' pull away in the second half.

By game's end Welker should be around ten catches for 125 yards and reach the zone twice, en route to another New England W.
