Florida vs. LSU: Last-Minute Spread Info, Line, BCS Impact and Predictions
LSU and Florida have two different mindsets as they enter their Week 6 clash with one another. The Tigers are on the hunt for a National Championship berth. The Gators are just looking to survive.
Although Florida obviously wants to win, getting out of Death Valley alive is their top priority.
The Gators lost their starting quarterback a week ago and are set to start a wet-behind-the-ears freshman named Jeff Driskel.
The Tigers just happen to feature one of the nation's top defenses.
The trip to Tiger Stadium couldn't come at a worse time for Florida, but they have no choice but to walk onto the field and play the game.
Where: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
When: Saturday, October 8th at 3:30 p.m. EDT
Watch: CBS
Spread: LSU -14
The Tigers are 3-2 against the spread this year while Florida is 4-1. The only two games LSU didn't cover was a 29.5-point spread against Kentucky and a 50-point spread against Northwestern State.
They beat each team pretty badly, but those are monster spreads.
Laying 14 points in an SEC game is always risky, but there is no telling what things will be like for the Gators on offense. With a freshman quarterback under center and one of the nation's most feared defenses on the other side of the ball, things could get ugly rather quick.
Over/Under: 41.5
These two teams have combined to hit the over only fifty percent of the time this season.
LSU's defense, which only gave up double-digit points to two very prolific offenses, is not going to bend much against a freshman starting his first game.
As good as Florida is at running the football, the Tigers are better at shutting it down.
Both teams will still want to run the ball regardless and that will run the clock.
Safest bet would be to stay with the under.
Florida's Injury Report:
John Brantley, QB: The senior signal caller is out for the game with an ankle sprain.
LSU's Injury Report:
Spencer Ware, RB: The sophomore is listed as questionable after leaving last week's win with a hamstring injury.
BCS/Top 25 Poll Implications
Both teams have a ton at stake here. Should LSU lose, it would derail any hopes of a National Championship berth. Should Florida lose its second straight game, it will set their chances of reaching the SEC Championship game back a bit further.
Fortunately, both Alabama and LSU are in the SEC West and Florida is in the East. They should still be able to make a run (assuming Brantley is healthy) to the Championship game should they win out against their East opponents.
LSU has more to lose in this game than Florida does.
Keys to Florida Win
Big plays. The Gators are not going to be able to pound the rock against LSU at all. They won't be able to chip away at them and there is a good likelihood they won't sustain drives for very long.
But, if they can get a few big play scores, they'll have a chance to spring the upset. Whether it be on a misdirection play, gadget play or just a typical speed sweep that reaches the outside, creating big plays is their only chance victory.
Keys to LSU Win
No mistakes. This team is better than Florida even with a healthy John Brantley. The only way LSU loses this game is if they shoot themselves in the foot.
Les Miles wants to get reinstated QB Jordan Jefferson more snaps, but he can't mess with the good thing he has going with Jarrett Lee. The two-quarterback dynamic is more than just this one game, it will affect this team for the rest of the season.
LSU just needs to do what they do and they'll walk away winners again this weekend.
Prediction: LSU 27, Florida 13
