Week 5 Waiver Wire: Jermaine Gresham and 3 Top Tight End Pickups

Eric BallOct 6, 2011

There are few tight ends playing with much consistency this season and it’s incredibly frustrating for fantasy owners.

If you are sick of having a big name with low production, check out these three options available in most ESPN standard leagues:

Jermaine Gresham- Cincinnati Bengals

Upon further review we all should have known better.

A first-round pick in 2010, Gresham had flashes of brilliance last year sandwiched between a few miscues.

Sound like a typical rookie to you?

Now with a year of experience under his belt, Gresham was given the dubious task of being a safety valve for rookie QB Andy Dalton.

As all fantasy owners know, young QBs tend to rely on their tight ends like the rest of the Kardashian’s rely on Kim.

So far he’s been targeted 28 times and has proven to be Dalton’s main read around the end zone as evident by his two touchdowns catches through four games.

Then there is this tidbit regarding the Jaguars defense, the team he’s playing this week:

They've allowed the most receptions (31) and second-most targets (46) and fantasy points (12.8) to opposing tight ends.

James Casey- Houston Texans

His production is almost impossible to predict. He goes from 29 yards combined in two weeks, to 126 yards back to eight yards.

The reason he’s valuable now is the three-week absence of Andre Johnson. The Texans need to be creative and will be spreading the ball all over the field.

Without Johnson, there isn’t a premier red zone target as well, which means Casey is going to have more opportunities to hit pay dirt.

Pick up Casey knowing he’s only a short-term replacement, but it might end up being the shrewdest move you make all season.

Ed Dickson- Baltimore Ravens

The rookie is beginning to gain the trust of QB Joe Flacco and it couldn’t have been more clear on Sunday when he was targeted 12 times.

OK, so he only caught four of them, but it’s evidence of how the Ravens passing game is evolving as the season progresses. As Dixon gets more and more comfortable in the offense, expect the targets to keep on coming.

Dixon is going to have his breakout weekend soon so it’s better to grab him now before having to wait your turn on the waiver wire.

Always be thinking ahead my fantasy freaks.
