U.S. vs Honduras: Jurgen Klinsmann Desperate for First Win in Soccer Friendly
The Americans have yet to win their first match under the guidance of new head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The former Germany national team manager took over from Michael Bradley in July of this year.
The team has faltered in their first three games under Klinsmann. They played to a draw against Mexico, lost at home against Costa Rica, and lost in Europe against Belgium.
This team needs a victory to boost confidence reserves, and they need it soon.
Klinsmann's job is obviously not in jeopardy, but he can't afford to have this team continue this disappointing form in front of the home crowd fans. Upon taking the role as U.S. manager, Klinsmann promised a new and improved style of play. Implementing changes of that magnitude takes time—look at Brazil's middling campaign in this past summer's Copa America—but fans are restless for improved results, especially with the embarrassment of the 4-2 loss to Mexico in June's Gold Cup final (Bradley's last match as head coach) yet to leave fans' minds.
Being without Landon Donovan will certainly hurt the Americans against Honduras, but they will have Clint Dempsey, who has been the side's most consistent attacking threat over the past few years.
Donovan has scored in big situations, but Dempsey shows up on a more regular basis, and is consistently pressing forward, getting to the net.
The Americans just need to get a victory to assuage growing fears and prove they are heading in the right direction. They are without a doubt the better team on paper, possessing vastly superior talent.
However, they still have issues to work out. The backline has struggled, the midfield has been wildly inconsistent, and the team still needs an attacking threat up front outside of Jozy Altidore.
This team is without a doubt a work in progress, but if Klinsmann wants to ease the qualms of American fans, he must prove he has this team heading in the right direction.
They will get there, but it is going to take some time.
Patience is a virtue for the fans, but patience isn't an excuse for a head coach. Especially not in this day and age.
He is not going to allow this team to lose another match, and he knows how important it is to leave Florida with a victory.
