Serie A Transfers: 4 Big-Name Players Who Could Come to Italy in January

Saqib Ahmed DadabhoyOct 5, 2011

After a lengthy stint where it seemed more big-name players were leaving Serie-A than actually joining it, the Italian league seems to be once again regaining some popularity with fans world over by way of some very exciting imports.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Diego Forlan and Robinho are just a few exciting names the league has attracted in the last few seasons. As it stands, there are now at least six teams which boast "big-name" players within their ranks: AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina and Napoli.

And if recent indications are anything to go by, fans of the Italian League can expect further arrivals of some very exciting players.

But who are these so called "big-name" players that may yet cross the divide into the Serie A this January?

Carlos Tevez

1 of 4

The ex-Manchester City captain, Carlos Tevez, seems all but scrapped from any future plans Roberto Mancini may hold for the team following his refusal to play during the Citizen's loss away to Bayern Munich last week.

Tevez seemed destined to leave in the summer transfer window, almost having agreed personal terms with Brazilian club Corinthians. He's also continuously stated his desire to "return home," though this has been questioned as the Argentine hit man has made a habit of switching clubs just when everything seems to be going as planned.

Inter Milan have already previously expressed their desire for the versatile forward, though given his ability and intensity on the pitch it seems Carlos Tevez would have little difficulty settling into the Italian game.

Whether Inter Milan really need another striker is a different matter altogether. What is seemingly certain at this point however is that Carlos Tevez will not feature for Manchester City again.

Robin Van Persie

2 of 4

Robin van Persie, Arsenal's newly crowned captain, may be on his way out of the club sooner than many fans anticipated, as he seems to be the only truly "world-class" player amongst a roster of some very mediocre ones.

And it probably wouldn't even come as much of a surprise to most Arsenal fans if he did indeed jump ship this January. Arsenal's lacklustre form and inability to even beat the smallest of opposition means that van Persie, now 28 years old, has very little chance of capturing silverware in the near future.

A player with so much ability and class deserves more than just an FA Cup winners medal to his name. And with his contract gradually winding down—it expires in the summer of 2013—expect tabloids to have a field day linking him to all sorts of foreign destinations.

His undying loyalty to Arsenal already rules out a potential move to any local rivals, while his complaining of Barcelona earlier this summer probably didn't do him any favours regarding a possible, yet highly unlikely move to Catalonia.

Italy then seems to be a favourable and likely destination, as Robin van Persie's technical skills would prove an asset to any Italian team. With Alessandro Del Piero now pushing 36, Juventus may do well to capture a much younger player that could potentially replace him.

Dimitar Berbatov

3 of 4

The English Premier League's top scorer of yesteryear has found first-team opportunities hard to come by following the emergence of Chicharito and now Danny Welbeck this season.

Last year, an automatic starter in a season where he simply couldn't stop scoring, he's been completely overlooked by Sir Alex Ferguson who seems to have lost faith in the Bulgarian striker this campaign. In fact, his troubles at making Manchester United's starting XI seem to go as far back as their UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley, where he was left out of the squad.

Despite now hitting the dreaded 30-year mark, Berbatov's lethalness in front of goal has never been in question. His creativity and technical ability would undoubtedly help him prosper in a league where similar types of players, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, continue to impress week in and week out.

The move itself would be welcomed by both the club and the player, as Berbatov can finally start getting some game time under his belt while Manchester United may use the funds to try and lure long-term target Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.

Fernando Torres

4 of 4

To say Fernando Torres' tenure at Stamford Bridge has been anything less than miserable would be putting things to lightly.

The Spanish hit-man that enjoyed great spells with Liverpool has simply failed to live up to the billing at his new club following his £50 million move to Chelsea. Despite showing occasional flashes of his pre-Chelsea era brilliance, "El Nino" hasn't been close to prolific for the Stamford Bridge faithful.

A move to Italy, where the pace and tempo is less challenging, would do both Chelsea and the player himself a world of good, as the club can attempt to retrieve some of the funds invested in the transfer and wages of the player.

Torres himself can try and regain some much needed form and sharpness in front of goal in a league where strikers seemingly enjoy their peak period after 30 years of age.

And given his worldwide reputation and commercial value, there probably wouldn't be a shortage of takers for the free-roaming striker.
