Austin Pacheco Video: Watch High School Kicker Shatter Historic Record
Who in the world is Austin Pacheco?
If you haven't heard of him, you will. He will quickly be attracting attention in the college football world, and likely the NFL afterward.
The Oakland Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski just made waves by tying the NFL record with a 63-yard field goal in Denver in Week 1 of the NFL regular season. But, he has nothing on Austin Pacheco.
Pacheco, a high school senior in Carson City, Nevada, shattered the NFL mark of 63 yards when he hit a 64-yard field goal to lead his team to a three-point victory.
The field goal is incredible, and while it's hard to take anything away from this kid, it's actually not as cool as you think.
In high school football, players are allowed to use a tee when kicking field goals, which makes it a lot easier to get underneath the ball, allowing the kicker to get a lot more distance.
However, we shouldn't rain on the kid's parade, as he made the fourth-longest field goal in high school history.
The craziest part about the kick is that it didn't even shatter the Nevada state record. Dirk Borgognone, a former NFL player, holds that record with a 68-yard field goal, according to Yahoo Sports.
After the game, Pacheco spoke with the Nevada Appeal about the kick.
"I'm still in shock," he said. "I knew it was good as soon as I hit it. The snap was perfect and the hold was perfect. The wind was blowing to the right and I played it perfectly."
It's a terrific accomplishment for the kid, and he should certainly bask in the moment.
If he keeps this up, it may not be long until we hear his name being called on Sundays.
