BCS Projections: Which Teams Are on Rise After Big Week 5 Wins?

Tim DanielsOct 2, 2011

Another crazy week of college football is in the books and several teams picked up statement wins in Week 5. While Arkansas and Stanford both picked up big victories on the road to a BCS bowl, neither of those teams were among the three biggest winners this week. Which teams were? Let's take a look.

No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama easily rolled past its second straight top-15 team with a 38-10 win over Florida. Trent Richardson led the way once again with 181 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns. The Gators, who were stout against the running game through four weeks, had no answer for the Heisman candidate.

The Crimson Tide defense remains No. 1 in the nation in points allowed at less than nine per game. The unit has not allowed more than 14 points in any contest. They are also just one of three teams in the country giving up fewer than 200 yards per game.

After back-to-back games against ranked opponents, the Crimson Tide will go a month without playing one. The next test will be against the current No. 1 LSU. The Tigers have to face Florida and Auburn before then, though, so a lot can change in the next four weeks.

Remaining Roadblocks: Nov. 5 vs. LSU, Nov. 26 at Auburn, SEC Championship Game

No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin knocked off four straight cupcakes (sorry, Oregon State) to open its season, so nobody was sure what to expect when they faced off with No. 8 Nebraska. The Badgers proceeded to crush the Cornhuskers thanks to a huge game from Montee Ball.

The combination of Russell Wilson, James White, Nick Toon and Ball is going to be tough to stop for even the nation's most vaunted defenses. Wilson has thrown 13 touchdown passes and just one interception so far and Toon has been on the receiving end of nearly half of the touchdowns.

The Badgers rank third in the nation in points for and second in points against through five weeks. While those stats should be taken with a grain of salt due to the schedule ease so far, it illustrates that Wisconsin is a well-rounded team that is in the BCS mix for the long haul.

Remaining Roadblocks: Oct. 22 at Michigan St., Nov. 19 at Illinois, Big Ten Championship Game

No. 8 Clemson Tigers

Many college football prognosticators (myself included) looked at Clemson's three-week run of Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech and figured there was no chance they would emerge undefeated. Well, they did and did so in convincing fashion.

The Tajh Boyd-to-Sammy Watkins connection has been on target all season. After looking shaky in limited action last season, Boyd's vast improvement in 2011 has been the main reason Clemson has been able to shock so many people so far.

It was the Tigers defense that really stepped up against the Hokies on Saturday. After allowing at least 19 points in every game, including against Troy and Wofford, they held Virginia Tech to just three. If that side of the ball can continue to improve, Clemson will have a serious BCS case.
