Predicting Top 10 College Football Recruiting Classes on National Signing Day

Edwin WeathersbyOct 2, 2011

Predicting who the top classes will is always a crap shoot because recruiting is a roller coaster. We've seen a lot happen so far and we're nowhere near close to National Signing Day.

However, I'm going to take on the challenge of predicting who, based on how things sit right now and which big name recruits are considering which schools, the top 10 classes will be.

Let's get this one in.

10. LSU

1 of 10

LSU's season success will make them pretty attractive to various recruits looking around. They should be able to land a couple more big names before the cycle is over.

Right now, the Tigers hold 19 commitments. They have no five-stars pledged, but LSU usually lands a couple elite players per class.

I love WR Avery Johnson and DE Toshiro Davis. Also, watch out for LB Trey Granier; he's a productive Mike LB prospect that makes stop after stop.

9. Notre Dame

2 of 10

Yeah, I think the Irish will be there somewhere inside the top 10 come next February. They have 15 commitments and have done well thus far.

They just recently locked up two stud DTs in Sheldon Day and DT/OT Jarron Joes.

You have love the look of a tandem of Tee Shepard and Ronald Darby in South Bend in the back end for the Irish. Nick Barratti could get a look at QB, and Deontay Greenberry is a heck of a talent at WR.

8. Texas A&M

3 of 10

The Aggies have 21 committed players, and they have specifically recruited the type of talent that will allow them to compete in the SEC moving forward.

They have pledges from QB Matt Davis, RB Trey Williams, OL Jordan Richmond, ATH Bralon Addison and WR Corey Thompson.

They're pretty much just about done with their general recruiting and will likely just try to sprinkle in a few more prospects moving forward in this cycle.

7. Georgia

4 of 10

Doesn't it seem like Georgia always finds a way to make a solid run in the homestretch of recruiting? I'm going out on a limb here, I think the Dawgs land Keith Marshall and Avery Young, both five-star prospects.

They have 15 commits, and there are two specific players I really like.

OT John Theus is a five-star player via Scout and Rivals and one of the top overall recruits in the country. DT Jonathan Taylor could develop into an All-SEC player under Todd Grantham in Athens.

6. Auburn

5 of 10

Even if you're an Alabama fan, you have to respect Auburn on the recruiting trail. They have two consecutive top-10 classes and likely will settle into the same tier this year.

The Tigers have 15 commits, with a slew of them being four-star or higher prospects.

QB Zeke Pike is the star of the class, but not by much because WR/ATH Ricardo Louis is a future star. So are TE Ricky Parks, RB TJ Yeldon and LB Cassonava McKinzy.

5. Michigan

6 of 10

Landing a top five class in his first full year at Michigan would be a huge coup for Brady Hoke.

He has almost immediately shown he and his staff can recruit with the best of 'em. Hoke has 23 commitments, three in the ESPNU top 150 and his LB class alone is great.

4. Florida

7 of 10

I'm a believer in that Florida could make a push for the top class. So having them settled in at fourth may be a bit low right now.

Florida is in on top talents like Keith Marshall, Tracy Howard, Jordan Jenkins and Nelson Agholor among others.

With commits like D.J. Humphries, Brian Poole and Jessamen Dunker already, this class is lining up to be special for the lead Gator.

3. Alabama

8 of 10

This list wouldn't feel right without Alabama. You just have to respect how the Tide recruit and assemble their classes.

Nick Saban has 19 pledges, and eight—count 'em, eight—are inside the ESPNU 150.

The two headliners are LB Reggie Ragland and DS Eddie Williams. I expect both of these defensive players to be All-SEC defenders one day and contend for All-American honors.

2. Texas

9 of 10

Now, now, now. This is a predictions piece, not a rankings piece. I have Texas with the top class right now, but the Longhorns always slip on NSD because they finish recruiting too early.

The same will likely happen again this year, only not so much.

RB Johnathan Gray is the headliner, then you get QB Conor Brewer, WR Cayleb Jones, OLs Kennedy Estelle, Curtis Riser and Camhron Hughes, DL Malcom Brown, CB Bryson Echols, LBs Tim Cole and Peter Jinkens and WR Thomas Johnson.

1. Florida State

10 of 10

I know I said I think Texas has the best class, but Florida State's class is like 1A.

They have 16 commitments, and according to ESPNU, 10 of them are among the best 150 overall players in the country. Yikes.

QB Jameis Winston is the No. 1 signal-caller in the country and could also be a first-round pick in the MLB draft next spring.

Mario Edwards is an elite overall player, along with talent like PJ Williams, Dalvon Stuckey, Justin Shanks, Chris Casher, Dante Fowler, Mario Pender and Marvin Bracy.
