College Football Rankings Week 6: Ranking the Best SEC Offenses in the Top 25
The new AP Top 25 poll features six teams from the SEC. Three teams are in the Top 5. LSU is ranked No. 1; Alabama is ranked No. 2.
Needless to say, the SEC consists of the most talented football teams in the country.
Defenses are athletic, aggressive and deep. Offenses range from Florida's spread attack to Alabama's single-back assault.
Each SEC powerhouse has their strengths and weaknesses.
Here's how the best teams in the SEC stack up offensively.
6. Auburn
1 of 6Auburn scored a huge upset in Week 5 with their upset of South Carolina. The Tigers won 16-13 in a defensive victory.
Auburn quarterback Barrett Trotter has nine touchdowns. However, he makes questionable decisions and has five interceptions. Trotter is a game manager. His main job is to get the ball into the hands of Auburn's weapons in the backfield.
Leading the charge in the backfield is sensational sophomore Michael Dyer. He has 567 yards and seven touchdowns so far this season and has already carried the ball more than 100 times this season. Dyer is a workhorse with homerun ability.
Ontario McCalebb also has over 200 yards rushing. He is Auburn's most versatile weapon.
Wide receiver Emory Blake is Trotter's main target. Blake is a possession receiver and is relied upon to get open for first down yardage. He has four touchdowns.
Auburn has a capable offense but their passing attack lacks explosion. Dyer is excellent, but Auburn is vulnerable against teams strong inside the box.
5. South Carolina
2 of 6South Carolina's offense features two of the best players in the nation: Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffery. They are college stars and future first-round NFL draft picks.
Lattimore works as hard as anyone in the nation and has carried the ball 124 times through five games. He has nine touchdowns and 677 yards.
He is talented enough to run well by himself. If the offensive line gives him room, he is unstoppable.
Alshon Jeffery has 19 catches 332 yards and two touchdowns. He has absurd size for a wide receiver, but lacks elite speed. However, he rarely loses a battle for the ball.
Quarterback Stephen Garcia is the missing piece for the Gamecocks. He has the talent but often struggles to make the right decisions. He has four touchdowns and leads the nation with nine interceptions.
South Carolina is capable of grinding it out with anyone. Lattimore will tote it as many times as Steve Spurrier wants him too.
Garcia needs to improve before this offense can take the next step.
4. Florida
3 of 6The Florida Gators may not be a Top 25 team if John Brantley's injury winds up being severe. Brantley left Florida's matchup with Alabama with a leg injury.
With Brantley, Florida was able to move the ball in spurts against the Tide's ferocious defense. Brantley has the arm to make most throws. He is more confident in Charlie Weis' system and it has shown so far this season.
Will Demps and Chris Rainey are two of the fastest weapons in the country. Whether it's a handoff or a catch, Rainey or Demps can go the distance any time they touch the ball.
Florida will suffer if Brantley is out for any period of time. Jeff Driskell is a talented freshman, but the SEC is unforgiving.
The Gators have a stable of versatile weapons, but without a proven quarterback their potential could be lost.
3. LSU
4 of 6The LSU Tigers boast one of the best defenses in the country. Their offense may lack the reputation of the Tigers' defense, but they should not be overlooked.
Jarrett Lee has done a great job replacing recently reinstated quarterback Jordan Jefferson. Lee has thrown for 793 yards and seven touchdowns.
He is not a game changer, but Lee is a solid game manager. He avoids mistakes and lets the Tigers' run game and defense win games.
Rueben Randle is their leading receiver. He is a big target who can stretch the field both ways. Odell Beckham works the middle very well as a freshman receiver for the Tigers.
Spencer Ware and Michael Ford have combined for over 600 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Both bring a power element to the LSU ground attack.
LSU's offense is very solid but methodical. If Lee gets time, he can pick defenses apart while the run game exhausts opposing players.
2. Arkansas
5 of 6Arkansas boasts one of the most dynamic passing attacks in the country. If Knile Davis were healthy, the Razorbacks would have one of the best overall offenses in the nation.
Tyler Wilson has thrown for 1,517 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has a variety of receiving options and he has the arm to find all of them. Wilson reads defenses well and understands the Razorbacks' playbook.
Jarius Wright has five receiving touchdowns and just under 500 yards. He is a speedster and very dangerous in the open field. Complementing Wright are veterans Joe Adams and Cobi Hamilton.
Ronnie Wingo Jr. is a solid option in the backfield but the Razorbacks lean on the passing attack most of the time. Wingo Jr. has two touchdowns on 60 carries this season.
The Razorbacks may be slightly one dimensional but that one dimension is very good. No one wants to air it out with Arkansas this season.
1. Alabama
6 of 6Alabama has the best rushing attack in the country and a passing attack that continues to get better.
A.J. McCarron gains more experience as each week passes. He has 919 yards and four touchdowns this season. Like LSU's Jarrett Lee, McCarron must manage the game and let his ground game take over.
Trent Richardson makes McCarron's job a lot easier. He has 622 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He is virtually impossible to stop, especially with the strength of Bama's offensive line.
Eddie Lacy averages almost nine yards per carry as Richardson's backup. He also has five touchdowns.
The Alabama receivers are not used frequently; no one has more than one touchdown. However, with their running backs carrying the load, they are not needed often.
Alabama doesn't hide what they do. They go right at defenses and dare them to stop them.
