College Football Rankings Week 6: 5 Leading Contenders for BCS Title Game

John RozumOct 2, 2011

College football is at its finest when there are multiple teams vying for a national title bid.

Obviously 2011 is no exception, and having every week mean more than the last is what makes each week more fun to watch.

To that end, here are five teams currently hoping they finish the regular season in one of the two top BCS spots.

Click the link for a full view of the most recent Coaches' Poll rankings.

No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners

1 of 5

Being the No. 1 school in the land since the preseason polls came out, the Oklahoma Sooners look to be the next wire-to-wire national champion.

The first place vote, however, have been gradually moving to Alabama and LSU of the SEC, so it'll be interesting to see what happens as the year plays out.

As for now though, Oklahoma is the No. 1 team, but watch out for an upset as the Sooners' opponents will bring their A-game every time this year.

And if you're a Sooners' fan, keep an eye on No. 21 Kansas State in addition to the Longhorns, Cowboys, and Aggies.

No. 2 LSU Tigers

2 of 5

They're No. 1 in the AP poll and No. 2 in the coaches' poll, but with the coaches' being used in the BCS, then they're real ranking is No. 2.

Nonetheless, the Bayou Bengals are most certainly deserving of some first place votes and have just as much on their resume as SEC West rival Alabama.

With wins over then-ranked No. 3 Oregon (now ranked No. 9), then-ranked No. 25 Mississippi State (on the road), and then-ranked No. 16 West Virginia (on the road), LSU may have the most impressive wins thus far.

In addition, they will be tested as the season continues with No. 18 Florida, No. 23 Auburn, No. 3 Alabama, and No. 12 Arkansas left on the schedule.

The Alabama game could very well determine the SEC West representative, as well as the BCS, but as for now LSU is playing just as good, if not better than the Sooners and Crimson Tide.

No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide

3 of 5

The Crimson Tide are within six first place votes of the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners, and 11 above the No. 2 LSU Tigers in the coaches' poll.

However, after their complete domination of then-ranked No. 14 Arkansas and now No. 18 Florida, Alabama looks like the best team in the nation.

Also count their convincing win over then-ranked No. 23 Penn State in Happy Valley (which is one of the more difficult places to play) and the school in crimson red is literally rolling.

The next test isn't until No. 2 LSU invades Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, AL. in early November, which most may argue is the real national championship of 2011.

No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers

4 of 5

After the beat-down that the Wisconsin Badgers put on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, putting them in the national title discussion isn't too far-fetched.

And although their schedule has been weak up until then, dominating a fellow school ranked in the top 10 is convincing.

That being said however, the remainder of the schedule doesn't play to their favor as much as LSU's, Alabama's, or Oklahoma's.

Only No. 16 Illinois and No. 20 Michigan State are left for ranked opponents, but as long as the Badgers win the Big Ten is dominating fashion, like they're now expected to, it will be tough keeping them out of the national title.

Having all of these teams in the national title race for the top two spots is definitely fun to watch and discuss, but it's also just more reason as to why college football needs a playoff format.

No. 6 Boise State Broncos

5 of 5

If there's a year in which Boise State can make the national title game, 2011 is the year.

For one, the win over Georgia could very well pay off as the Bulldogs are good enough to win the SEC East.

Also, Oklahoma is capable of being upset by Texas, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Baylor, and/or Oklahoma State.

Adding to it, Wisconsin's and Stanford's schedules aren't that much more difficult than Boise's, thus leaving LSU and Alabama.

Obviously someone has to lose that game, but the question is whether the Broncos leap frog one of them in the rankings thereafter.

And even if they do, with the SEC's brutal schedule, can the Broncos remain ahead if they get ahead?

Make no mistake about it, Boise will get a BCS bowl bid, but for a national title to happen, Georgia has to at least make an SEC title game appearance, Toledo must win the MAC, Tulsa must win the Conference USA, and Fresno State must win the WAC.

It'd be different if Toledo, Tulsa, or Fresno State were ranked, but they're all not, so by season's end Boise will need them to be, that way the BCS recognizes the Broncos having a solid strength of schedule.
