College Football Rankings Week 6: 5 Worst Teams in the Top 25

Ian HanfordOct 2, 2011

With the passing of Week 5 in the college football season comes another AP Top 25 poll to peruse and debate.

Wisconsin has replaced Oklahoma State in the Top five. The Badgers enter the Top five at No. 4.

Alabama jumped Oklahoma for the No. 2 ranking. The Crimson Tide scored a big win Saturday night against the Florida Gators in The Swamp.

Beyond the Top five, Michigan continues to climb. Texas A&M continues to plummet—two teams going different directions, but is Michigan better than Texas A&M?

That is debatable.

With Week 6 around the corner, some teams are overachieving.

The Top 25 will continue to shuffle week after week and teams will fall from the ranks.

Here are the five worst teams currently in the AP Top 25.

Michigan Wolverines

1 of 5

The Michigan Wolverines climbed from No. 19 to No. 12 in this week's AP poll. The Wolverines moved to 5-0 after beating Minnesota 58-0 in Week 5.

Denard Robinson has over 1,300 total yards. He also has 14 total touchdowns.

Robinson continues to improve in Brady Hoke's pro-style offense. However, he is running an offense suited for a pocket passer. Robinson is as dangerous as any player in the country, but he will never be a traditional, drop-back quarterback.

Fitz Toussaint has four touchdowns out of the Michigan backfield. He is a viable presence next to Robinson.

Michigan is second in the country in scoring defense, allowing just over 10 points per game.

San Diego State, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan could play a factor in that. Until the defense sees better competition, their success is hard to gauge.

Michigan is an improved but unproven team. The most challenging part of their schedule is ahead of them.

If they want to stay in the Top 25 they will need to earn it.

Texas Longhorns

2 of 5

The Texas Longhorns come in at No. 11 this week in the AP Top 25. In Week 5 the Longhorns defeated Iowa State to improve to 4-0.

Coming off a 5-8 season, the Longhorns need to prove they are still contenders in 2011. So far they have answered the call. However, maintaining their success is questionable.

The Texas passing attack is led by Case McCoy. McCoy has two touchdowns this season. Both came in an impressive performance against BYU.

Texas' ground attack features two running backs. Freshman Malcolm Brown has lived up to expectations so far. He has over 300 yards through the first four games. Fozzy Whittaker leads the team in rushing touchdowns with four.

Defensively the Longhorns allow 14.8 points per game. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will test their mettle in Weeks 6 and 7.

Texas is a good team, but not No.11. They have a chance to prove their worth in the next two weeks.

Kansas State Wildcats

3 of 5

The Kansas State Wildcats are currently ranked at No. 20. Bill Snyder has his players believing after a Week 5 upset over the Baylor Bears.

Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein is a dual threat. He is more of a threat with his legs. He has over 400 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Klein has also thrown for six scores and over 400 yards.

John Hubert has 343 yards and one touchdown out of the Wildcats' backfield—he is a very fast back averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

Kansas State's offense is solid, but one dimensional at times. Quality defenses will stack the box and force Klein to win with his arm.

That will pose problems against the Big-12 leaders.

Defensively, Kansas State has done a good job against sub-par competition. Against high-powered Big-12 offenses, that will change.

Weeks 9-12 will be the test for Snyder's boys. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas will pose a dangerous trial by fire for the Wildcats.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

4 of 5

Nebraska fell from No. 8 to No. 14 in this week's AP poll. The Cornhuskers were given an unpleasant welcome to the Big Ten by Wisconsin Saturday night. The Huskers lost 48-17.

Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska offense entered Camp Randall with a 4-0 record. Chattanooga, Wyoming, Washington and Fresno State did not prepare the Huskers for Wisconsin's brand of football.

Wisconsin forced Martinez to use his arm as much as his legs. Martinez went 11-22 and threw three interceptions.

Good defenses stop one-dimensional offenses. Martinez is dazzling in his option attack. If defenses stack the box, his lofty rushing totals will still result in losses.

Nebraska's defense should be great. On paper they are as talented as anyone. Jared Crick, Lavonte David and Alfonzo Dennard are three of the best players at their respective positions.

Despite this, the Cornhuskers surrender 27.2 points per game.

Nebraska crashed down to Earth hard in Week 5. Week 6 against Ohio State will provide another test for Bo Pelini's crew.

Baylor Bears

5 of 5

Baylor nearly fell out of the Top 25 after their Week 5 loss to Kansas State. The Bears fell to No. 25.

Despite the Week 5 upset, Robert Griffin III's Heisman hype continues to climb. Griffn threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns. He did, however, have a crucial interception at the end of the game.

Nonetheless, he is shredding secondaries with incredible efficiency. Griffin could be the Cam Newton of 2011 without the exposure.

The rest of the Baylor football offense is solid. Terrance Ganaway has over 300 yards on the ground, and Kendall Wright has seven receiving touchdowns.

Defensively Baylor has struggled—they surrender 28.8 points per game.

Baylor is not a team you want to get into a shootout with. With Griffin leading the attack, they can score in bunches. However, their defense is questionable.

The Big-12 conference schedule will exploit that.
