John Brantley Injury: Florida Gators Will Adjust to Life Without Brantley
The extent of the injury to Forida Gators' QB John Brantley is not yet known, but anyone that saw the injury can tell you he is likely to be sidelined for a while. While the injury to their starting QB is a blow, it is something Florida will be able to overcome.
Florida used Freshman QB Jeff Driskel to replace Brantley on Saturday. Driskel is a talented but inexperienced passer. Driskel has all the tools to succeed.
He is 6'4" and 224 pounds. He runs a 4.54 40. He has a strong arm and great athleticism. This guy can mature to be a great spread option QB, and he has enough pure passing skills to also succeed in a pro-style offense.
There will certainly be some growing pains. This guy is raw. He is a true freshman that faces a huge adjustment to life in the SEC.
Florida has plenty of weapons to help him adjust, though. And those weapons start with RB Chris Rainey.
Rainey is an outstanding back. He can take it to the house on any play. He is excellent on handoffs and even better when he catches the ball in the open field on pass plays. This is a tremendous security blanket for any QB.
All of that said, Florida is in trouble for their next game. They will be facing a defense next week against No. 1 LSU that is comparable to the Alabama defense that shut them down this week.
After that though, Florida has a string of games that they will be able to win with or without Brantley. They only have two games remaining against teams that entered this week ranked in the Top 25. They have No. 10 South Carolina and then end the season against No. 23 Florida State.
None of these teams possess the type of stiffing defense that can shut this explosive offense down. Florida is going to have a hard time making a BCS bowl game, but they can still hope for a high profile bowl game and a tremendous season.
