UFC 92 Preview

Jessy MorrisNov 29, 2008

On Aug. 9, 2008, the UFC presented their biggest PPV of the year, UFC 87. Now, only one event is left before the end of the year and guess what...It will be even bigger than UFC 87. With the anticipated fight between GSP and B.J. Penn at UFC 94, a lot of people are looking past what should be a great event, UFC 92.

Two title fights will take place in one night and three of the five main-card fights are main-event status. I'm honestly really anxious for the event and decided to give my opinion on the three huge fights.

If you live on Mars and don't know what the fights are, here you go:

Quinton "Rampage"  Jackson  vs.  Wanderlei  Silva

So here's a little preview of what we will see on Dec. 27, 2008 from the last and possibly best event the UFC will present this year.

Quinton Jackson vs Wanderlei Silva

This is a huge fight for anybody who loved PRIDE. These two guys were two of the best the company had to offer at 205 and they fought twice already. "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva defeated Quinton Jackson both times by KO and TKO.

At UFC 92, "Rampage" will be looking forward making it 1-2 against Silva.

This will actually be the first time these guys fight in a cage, so it will be interesting if this will make any difference in the strategy. Both men seem to have made the transition from ring to cage pretty well.

Jackson became UFC light-heavyweight champion in the cage when he defeated Chuck Liddell for the second time; he also unified the titles when he defeated Dan Henderson at UFC 75.

Unfortunately, he went on to lose the title at UFC 86 to Forrest Griffin and this fight against Silva is to prove a lot of things. Can he beat Wanderlei? Can he get back in the title picture?

Silva actually fought twice in the UFC before making it big in PRIDE. Those two first UFC fights ended up in losses but he returned to the UFC octagon on December 29th, 2007 to fight Chuck Liddell and...He lost again.

Seems Silva was uncomfortable in a cage, or was he? At UFC 84, Silva fought Keith Jardine, a man who had previously defeated Liddell, but Wanderlei beat him up and won in 36 seconds.

This fight means a lot, they hate each other, they always have they always will and at UFC 92 they fight for different things but one thing is the same, both men fight to make it back in the title picture, and I believe Quinton Jackson will win this fight, yes he lost twice before but UFC 92 will be his time to shine and I predict a victory for "Rampage."

Antonio Minautoro Nogueira vs. Frank Mir

This will be a very interesting fight because both men are considered to be the two best heavyweight submission fighters in all of MMA. To make things even more interesting, they are coaching opposite teams on TUF Season Eight.

Nogueira has fought everybody...No, really, everybody, guys like Horn, Overeem, Henderson, Coleman, Herring, Cro Cop, and Emelianenko, and he's beaten most of them.

He made his UFC debut at UFC 73 where he defeated Heath Herring for the third time and then defeated Tim Sylvia at UFC 81 to become the interim heavyweight champion. Nogueira is well known for taking vicious beatings and always coming back and winning.

People often count Frank Mir out too quickly. He made a huge bang in the UFC, winning five of his first seven fights by submission in less than two minutes. He became the UFC heavyweight champion when he broke Tim Sylvia's arm.

He then had a motorcycle accident that changed everything.

He returned a changed man mentally and wasn't able to pick up victories. He wanted to retire after the Vera loss, but his wife talked him into staying and he did. He returned at UFC 74 and made short work of Antoni Hardonk and did the same against Brock Lesnar at UFC 81.

He beat both men with first round submissions in less then two minutes, making me question...Is the old Frank Mir back?

It will be interesting to see if they fight on the ground or if one of the two fighters decides to stand and strike. My heart is 100 percent with Mir, but logically, I have to go with Nogueira.

Why? I don't know I just don't see Frank winning. Hopefully I'm counting Mir out too soon and he'll be able to surprise everybody, but for the record I predict Nogueira by TKO.

Rashad Evans vs Forrest Griffin

This will be a war, honestly I can't wait for this fight and I honestly can't say who will win. Both guys have evolved so much since The Ultimate Fighter and have become two of the best in the 205 division. I bill this fight as "The Battle of THE Ultimate Fighters" and "THE" because I feel these two guys are probably the two best fighters to come out of that house.

Rashad Evans has grown so much as a fighter since his stay in the house. He was the guy everybody underestimated and look at him now. He has a 16-0-1 record, he's undefeated and only one man actually came close to beating him and that was Tito Ortiz.

He delivered two of the most shocking KOs in UFC history against Sean Salmon and Chuck Liddell. He has become a very dangerous striker and add his already impressive wrestling background and you get a awesome undefeated fighter.

Forrest Griffin started out a little like Rashad in the way that everybody counted him out. He lost a close decision against Ortiz, and a lot of people gave Griffin the victory. He opened everybody's eyes when he defeated Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 76.

Rua was considered by a lot of fans to be the best fighter at 205, still, Forrest finished him off. Everybody counted him out of his fight against "Rampage," still he won and became the UFC light-heavyweight champion.

Forrest has grown so much and his never say die attitude makes him a tough opponent for everybody.

I rarely don't have a prediction, but I don't have a prediction because I see this fight going so many different ways. It's not a good idea to count Forrest out of any fight before it takes place and with that said, if you ask me a prediction and insist on it, I predict one hell of a fight and... Griffin by decision.

UFC 92 will present three huge fights that could be main events on other cards and two title fights will take place. I can't wait and I'm actually disappointed that it's still in one long month. Hopefully I influenced each one of you at watching the event, if you weren't already pumped up for it. All I can say is... LET'S GET IT ON!
