Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao: 3 Reasons Why the Fight Will Happen

Nedu ObiJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, two of the best welterweights in the world will mix-it-up sooner rather than never.

The much anticipated clash between two of boxings pound-for-pound elites has been overshadowed, by behind the scenes dramatics—he said, she said and that’s all she wrote histrionics.

Mayweather and Pacquiao were originally scheduled to fight in early 2010—that date was procrastinated due to Pacquiao’s alleged refusal to subject his-self to Olympic-style drug testing.

Needles anyone?

Several months later the fight was back on—hypothetically speaking that is. Pacquiao had agreed to Mayweather’s terms—all that was left was for Mayweather to sign on the dotted line.

The dead line for signing the contract arrived and disappeared much like Mayweather. That was another spanner in the works—the fight was on-hold for the foreseeable future.

Well that’s what they’d have us believe.

However, if the truth be told, amidst the whole brouhaha—Mayweather and Pacquiao have played a sublime game—three-pointers from the four corners of the boxing ring—thus garnering immense publicity and interest from both fans and media.

Pacquiao and Mayweather have read the script—and they’ve performed like genuine thespians.

All that is left now, is an Oscar-style performance from both pugilists come fight night.

These are the reasons why this super-fight is on...

3. Public Demand

1 of 3

For several years now, most boxing enthusiasts have been clamouring for Mayweather and Pacquiao to throw leather.

So when it was finally announced that two of boxings biggest stars were indeed set to fight, the furor was ineffable.

For a while now boxing has been in a state of stagnation vying for pay-per-view buys with other thriving sports, especially mixed martial arts and most notably the UFC.

To the boxing faithful, this would be the fight that would put the art of the sweet science back on the map to a massive scale.

However, the fans aspirations of witnessing boxing at its most brilliant—like a shooting star—were dashed.

There have been piqued reactions to the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on-off saga, most aptly put is disgust.

Now with mounting pressure coming from all sides of the sphere, the fight will materialize, more so for the fans because what the public wants, the public gets.

The fans have demanded it should happen—if not—Pacquiao and Mayweather would be best served to ply their trade elsewhere.

2. Cash Money

2 of 3

Money isn’t the issue here for Mayweather and Pacquiao?

Oh yes it is.

I’m assuming both fighters are financially secure for life, and acquiescing an exorbitant amount of cash for a single fight wouldn’t do either man any harm—if anything it would augment their already swollen Botox-injected accounts.

Pacquiao could very well do with the extra cash—as he has a tendency for being munificent with money, apropos his entourage and family.

Also, once he retires from boxing he’d be required to have his coffers full—to finance his burgeoning political/lawmaker career back in the Philippines.

As for Mayweather, with a moniker like “Money,” that’s all that needs to be said.

The bottom line is this: What Pacquiao and Mayweather could’ve generated money-wise in their original bout, will no doubt triple, even quadruple by the time they eventually meet sometime in 2012.

This fight will be the biggest PPV in boxing history.

1. Legacy

3 of 3

Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have achieved greatness in equal measures.

Mayweather (42-0), is a five division world champion with an impressive record—and has fought and defeated the likes of Zab Judah, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Márquez, Shane Mosley and most recently Victor Ortiz.

Pacquiao (53-3-2), on the other hand is the first eight-division world champion with notable wins over Marco Antonio Barrera, Érik Morales, Juan Manuel Márquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Ángel Cotto, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley.

Pacquiao’s next fight is slated for Nov. 12, in a trilogy bout with Juan Manuel Márquez.

If he takes care of business then the only true fight out there for him would be Mayweather. The same applies to Mayweather because no one wants to see a re-match with Ortiz just yet, if ever.

Mayweather has gone on record stating that he’s all about the money and not the legacy.

However, he must know though, that if he’s ever to be mentioned or ranked alongside such pound-for-pound greats such as Sugar Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Leonard or Roy Jones Jr., then he must fight Pacquiao.

This will be a fight for the ages.

Now that is legacy that I doubt either Mayweather or Pacquiao could or would abnegate. Not for all the money and fame in the world.
