UFC on Versus 6: Predictions You Can Take To The Bank
This weekend. a UFC title will be on the line on free TV for the first time since Rampage Jackson defended his title against Dan Henderson at UFC 75.
The Bantamweight division will come back home to Versus, and Dominick Cruz will defend his 135 lb. title against Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson.
Also on the card is a heavyweight battle between Pat Barry and Stefan Struve, a welterweight clash pitting Anthony Johnson against Charlie Brenneman and a battle between former TUF lightweights, Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman.
Matt Wiman vs Mac Danzig
1 of 4This is actually a rematch from UFC 115, where Wiman won by a very controversial submission. The referee thought Danzig had gone out, but he evidently was fine, leading to the rematch being made over a year later.
Wiman recently dropped a close decision to current contender Dennis Siver at UFC 132 and needs the win to get back into the mix, while Danzig hasn’t fought since he lit up Joe Stevenson at UFC 124.
This is a close fight that could go either way, but Wiman looked good in his loss to Siver and was on a bit of a hot streak before that fight, so I’m picking him to win by decision.
Anthony Johnson vs Charlie Brenneman
2 of 4The last time we saw Charlie Brenneman, he was shocking the fight world, taking a fight with rising star Rick Story and grinding out a decision win at UFC on Versus 5.
The win earned Brenneman a shot at another big name in the welterweight division, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.
As impressive as the win over Story was, I think Brenneman got lucky, since Story had just lost a high caliber opponent barely a day before the fight. I don’t see him beating Rumble, and the fight won’t last very long, either.
Johnson by first round TKO.
Pat Barry vs Stefan Struve
3 of 4Two of the most exciting heavyweights in the sport are set to fight in the co main event this weekend, and quite honestly, this fight could go either way.
Barry has serious standup skills and some power in all four limbs, which makes him a scary opponent for someone like Struve, who doesn’t exactly have a granite chin.
While Struve may be in trouble on the feet, his ju jitsu is very good, and his long limbs are a nightmare for an undersized heavyweight like Barry. He can stick to the outside and use his reach to frustrate Barry until he drags it to the mat and gets the finish.
Struve takes this one by second round submission.
Dominick Cruz vs Demetrious Johnson
4 of 4Don’t be surprised if this fight looks like it’s stuck on fast forward, because these might be the two fastest fighters in the UFC.
Cruz has been a worthy champion thus far, and his style makes him a tricky fight for anyone at 135, as his movement and ability to land a high percentage of his strikes are a deadly combination.
However, if Cruz has one area of his game where he has yet to be tested, it is his wrestling and his ju jitsu off of his back. Johnson might have the tools to get him down and hold him down, which would be a disaster for the champion.
Unfortunately for Johnson, I don’t see him as the guy who knocks off Cruz, and while he may be a champion someday (at flyweight, perhaps?), Cruz will walk away with the decision here.
