UEFA Champions League: 5 Losers from Day Two

Stefan GouyetSep 30, 2011

The Champions League Group Stage has definitely started off well. This year's edition of the prestigious tournament began superbly, with games like Barcelona-Milan, Dortmund-Arsenal and Inter-Trabzonspor amazing the world.

Match Day 2 of the Champions League followed a similar path.

However, this week, there was a big difference in the type of results.

Barcelona crushed BATE Borisov, 5-0, in Belarus, while Manchester United drew 3-3 to Basel at Old Trafford.

One interesting fact is that 32 goals were scored in Day 1 of the Champions League while an amazing 46 were bagged in Day 2.

The truth is, for many of Europe's top clubs, there was a worrying number of negatives to take away from their second Champions League match.

Here's a list of five losers from Day 2 of the Champions League:

Carlos Tevez

What to say about Carlos Tevez?

After years of bizarre changes in attitude towards Manchester City, it looks like the Argentinian has pulled the final straw.

After the substitution debacle on Tuesday, Tevez was suspended by City and it doesn't look like he will ever play again for Roberto Mancini.

I'm not sure why any team would want to buy Tevez but it seems he's going to have a fairly large number of suitors come January.

Salomon Kalou

2 of 5

It's hard to be a forward on Chelsea.

It's even harder when you do something as unintelligent as Salomon Kalou's handball at Valencia.

With Chelsea playing well and having a deserved one-goal lead, Kalou needlessly handled the ball in the penalty area in the 86th minute. This came four minutes after coming off the bench.

Kalou has always been a source of discontent for those at Stamford Bridge, but his appearance against Valencia reaches new levels. He may be the first to leave Chelsea in January.

Shaktar Donetsk

3 of 5

Many people were wondering how Porto, Shaktar Donetsk, Zenit St. Petersburg and APOEL Nicosia  were put in one group, while Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Villareal and Napoli filled another.

People viewed the group with Porto and Shaktar to be significantly worse than the "Group of Death" that included Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

The truth is that Shaktar Donetsk and Porto have been great in Europe in recent years, but they are still part of the lesser-known teams category of the Champions League.

Unfortunately for Shaktar Donetsk, this Champions League campaign has started badly. The former Europa League winners lost to Porto on opening day, a match in which they scored first but got two players sent off.

On Day 2, Shaktar dug themselves into a ditch with a 1-1 home draw to APOEL Nicosia. The Ukranians face Zenit St. Petersburg in their next Champions League match.

Lille

4 of 5

Lille are currently the French Ligue 1 Champions, but they are certainly not acting like it. They are sitting in sixth place in the league (with a record of 3-4-1) and have drawn their two opening Champions League matches.

The worrying thing for LOSC is that they are in a winning position for most of the time. Against CSKA Moscow three weeks ago, the Northern France side gave up a two-goal lead in the last 20 minutes. On Wednesday at Trabzonspor, Lille were one goal up until the 74th minute as the Turkish team scored from a penalty.

In both Champions League encounters so far, Lille have handed draws to their opponents. Next up for the French side is a home match against a rejuvenated Inter Milan.

The Manchester Defenses

5 of 5

Manchester United and Manchester City didn't have the best of matches this Tuesday.

City lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena while United were lucky to draw against FC Basel at Old Trafford in an entertaining 3-3 game.

The two Manchester teams began their respective campaigns superbly, but both have seen their form drop in recent weeks. Problems at the back were exposed in the Champions League.

In City's defense, they faced an in-form Bayern Munich team at away. However, while Joe Hart made some superb stops, the Citizens were astonishingly poor in defense.

For United, they were playing in front of their home fans with a strong squad and against a side that should have crumbled at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were sloppy at the back and allowed three goals (it could have been more), which is something that will irritate Alex Ferguson.
