Big 12 Conference: Dying Conference Must Stop Wasting Time with BYU and TCU

Andrew KulhaSep 29, 2011

It's quite obvious that once Texas A&M officially moved to the SEC it marked the unofficial end of the Big 12 conference.

That's why it doesn't make much sense as to why they continue to find ways to fight the inevitable. I understand all the money that is tied-up in the conference, but when A&M left they opened the floodgates to the inevitable.

Soon enough Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will be looking for suitors, and then Texas and their multi-million dollar TV deal will be right behind.

Without those three programs the Big 12 stands no chance of any endorsements whatsoever.

It's unfortunate, but teams like Baylor, Iowa State and Kansas won't be an attractive enough base to lure any big-name programs in.

The smart thing to do is get out while you can, and try to get as much as you can in the process. It's just the reality of the current situation that is college football.

The NCAA is very slowly but surely making their way to a super-conference system.

It's a case of being in or out, and if you're not in then you are definitely out.

The Big 12 is allegedly still holding on to hope, though. According to the International Business Times, the conference is trying to lure in new candidates before it is too late:

"

The latest rumors surrounding Big 12 expansion have the conference adding BYU and stealing TCU away from the Big East.

Various reports indicate that BYU and TCU are both under serious consideration, along with schools like West Virginia and Louisville, for an invite to join the Big 12.

"
"BYU has been a target of the Big 12 for a while now, according to reports, but there is some question as to whether it would give up its newly gained football independent status."
"

BYU, similar to Notre Dame, has a few rivalry games that it likes to play each year - it recently signed a 12-year deal to play Boise State - and some of the reluctance to join the Big 12 could stem from possibly losing some of that scheduling freedom.

The Upset, a blog that covers West Coast college conferences, reported on Tuesday that BYU already has an offer to join the Big 12 and the school is currently reviewing the benefits of joining the conference.

"

While it surely is a cute offer by the Big 12, is a team like BYU or even TCU enough to keep a program like Oklahoma or Texas to stop considering a move to a more prolific conference?

Perhaps the lack of competition or traditional roots will be enough to persuade them to stay, but I don't think the schools are that short sited.

The future of college football seems to be looking more and more like super-conferences jam packed with competitive teams, and that will eventually lead to a type of playoff tournament system.

It's important to note that all I am doing is speculating, but it sure sounds good doesn't it? I'm sure I'm not the only one who can see this vision slowly but surely taking place.

Conferences like the Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC and SEC will most likely be the last ones standing when all is said and done, and they will do so by poaching big-name teams away from conferences like the Big 12.

We've already seen it start happening, so what makes you think that it won't continue to happen?

The best thing Big 12 schools could do right now is to hit the back channels and start figuring out where they will eventually land.

Everything else is just a waste of time.
