Is Bob Arum Standing in the Way of a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Fight?
During the last two failed negotiations concerning the world's most-awaited boxing fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Top Rank's Promotions owner and Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum appeared frustrated and disgusted every time negotiations failed due to certain disagreements.
According to Floyd's uncle and trainer Jeff Mayweather, however, Arum does not really want Pacquiao to face Mayweather at this time.
Percy Crawford of Fytehype sought Jeff Mayweather's thoughts in an interview about Floyd's chances of facing Pacquiao anytime soon.
In response, Jeff said,"it's a situation where Arum is not behind the fight. It's a situation where Arum is not ready to cash out on Manny. He wants Manny to beat everybody and makes as much as he possibly can and allow Floyd to be Manny's last fight. That way if he wins or loses, it doesn't matter."
As a businessman, it is normal for Arum to make as much money as possible on his fighters, as long as he does not violate his fight contracts with the fighters.
And if there is any merit to Jeff's observation, then the fight every boxing fan wants to see won't happen anytime soon.
And from Jeff's observation, it appears the problem is not with Floyd but with Arum and Pacquiao.
Pacquiao said he may be retiring in three years—which means he will face six different opponents, assuming that he fights twice a year as he normally does, before fans can see a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather match.
But, if we add three more years to Mayweather's age of 33 this year, he will then be 36 by the time he touches gloves with Pacquiao, who will be 35 by then.
We may still be able to witness a good fight between them as they begin to taper off in three years, but many things can stand in the way—and there is no guarantee the fight will even happen.
There is also no guarantee that boxing fans will still crave a Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight at that point, as new talents could emerge and grab the spotlight from them in the intervening years.
Pacquiao could still break the impasse by bravely telling Arum he's done and that he wants Mayweather now for the sake of his millions of fans around the world.
And if Arum says yes, then we can all rejoice.
