College Football Picks Week 5: Why Alabama and Wisconsin Will Escape Upsets

Gabe ZaldivarSep 29, 2011

Saturday can't come soon enough. For two lucky teams, their matchups couldn't be any more perfect to quiet critics.

If you want to get to the top in college football, you are going to need pass a couple of tests during the season. There is no other way to prove your worth to voters.

Teams are forced to walk the gauntlet that is the college football season. Next up on the chopping block is Wisconsin and Alabama. Both squads face fierce opponents that serve to derail a promising season from both of them.

Supporters should breath a sigh of relief as the two powerhouses will continue to be just as powerful after Saturday. These are two games that will go to the favorites. If you are looking for upsets, you will have to wait for another week.

No. 8 Nebraska vs. No. 7 Wisconsin

This game has been circled on every Big Ten fan's calendar. The two giants will finally go head-to-head in a game that will hopefully live up to the hype.

This is the first true test for both squads, but we already have a semblance of who these programs are. Entering the marquee game, Nebraska is the much more shaky powerhouse. They have a suspect defense that will be put to task by Heisman candidate Russel Wilson.

Wisconsin has also proved to have one of the most stingy defenses. While they have faced non-lethal offenses so far, the Badgers are primed to bother an inconsistent Taylor Martinez.

All signs point to a Wisconsin win.

No. 3 Alabama vs. No. 12 Florida

This is the game that will begin to show whether Alabama will be in the BCS title game, or just fall short.

They were supposed to be challenged by Arkansas last weekend, only to pass that test with flying colors. Now they face a mirror image of themselves in Florida.

The Gators are just as defensive minded, and have just a dynamic running game. However, in a contest with two like teams, you have to go with the club that does the little things better.

Alabama is a shade better on the defensive end. I can't help but side with the program that has Trent Richardson on their team. The Tide will roll again.
