Maryland Football Uniforms: Terrapins Continue to Put Fashion Ahead of Football
Imagine Mack Brown releasing the socks to be worn for the next Texas game, or Nick Saban discussing color schemes on the helmets. That type of ridiculous discussion is starting up again by the Maryland Terrapins.
Maryland football has been known more by their decisions on the fashion front rather than what they have accomplished on the field. For head coach Randy Edsall, that may be precisely the point.
Edsall took to the wonderful land of Twitter, where gaffes and guffaws are forever etched into our sports memories. He tweeted this masterpiece along with a picture for us all to marvel at.
Then came the picture of what the Terrapins would be rocking on Saturday. I agree that they are nifty duds, but that is hardly the point.
My very first thought was, so? Who cares what the Terrapins are wearing? Just go out and beat Towson, and let the good people who run your PR handle the breaking news pertaining to your fashion.
Since when did head coaches decide the look and feel of a team's jerseys? I can't imagine Phil Jackson talking about his Lakers wardrobe ahead of a playoff game.
I would rip Andy Reid if he released a statement reporting the Eagles were going to wear throwbacks. A head coach is made to win ball games, not win over fans with fashion.
Maryland is on what can only be described as a desperation marketing tour. They opened the season in god-awful uniforms that had us all talking.
After a 1-2 start, the conversation is still being led back to the jerseys. I understand that the program can only be helped by a discussion on their uniforms.
Any talk is good talk in a sport that demands buzz. However, there are people for this—leave the small stuff to the people who care for such things.
The only thing that your tweet means to me is that you are taking your eye off the ball. I agree that the uniforms look great, now let's put some shine on that team of yours.
