Valencia vs. Chelsea: Blues' Fortunes Still Bright Despite Tie with Valencia

Andrew KulhaSep 28, 2011

It's hard to be satisfied with anything other than a win, but fans of the Chelsea Blues should be feeling pretty good about their squad right now.

Their match against Valencia ended up in a 1-1 draw, and as usual, there are both good and bad things to take from the pitch. Overall, there was more good than bad, though, which is always an encouraging sign.

Naturally, let's start with the bad.

This was a game that the Blues should have won, yet they gave it away because of a stupid penalty near the end. They led for most of the match 1-0 and actually looked to have all but secured the win.

With three minutes left to go in the match the Blues gave up a penalty that cost them the equalizer, and a match that should have ended with much more ended up in a draw. Here is what the reaction looked like on the live-blog from goal.com:

"

With 30 minutes left, you would have thought Chelsea fans would be the happier of the two Premier League sides in action tonight, but Salomon Kalou’s crazy handball three minutes from time gifted Valencia the equaliser. But one stand-out performance from Chelsea—Frank Lampard. The England man scored the Blues’ goal and staked his claim to have his regular spot in the centre of midfield back.

But really, what was Salomon Kalou doing?! Under a little bit of pressure from a Valencia forward as he challenged for the ball just inside his own area, the Chelsea substitute stuck out his hand to punch clear. Madness. Andre Villas-Boas will surely have something to say about that in his post-match press conference.

"

Chelsea head man Andre Villas-Boas is certainly going to have to address the mental breakdown, but other than that, the Blues looked good.

That is the good news for Chelsea fans. Frank Lampard looks to be regaining form, and Didier Drogba is settling in after his horrific fall and subsequent concussion.

The Blues are getting healthy, and when together, this Chelsea team can be very good. Villas-Boas needs to get his team on the same page, as well as get rid of the mental errors though.

All in all, Chelsea is looking set to move forward and be a strong contender. They are getting healthy and starting to show us a glimpse of their true potential.

The future is looking pretty bright for the Blues.
