Texas A&M Joins SEC, Who Would Be the Most Exciting 14th for the Tide to Face?
Texas A&M has all but officially entered the SEC, but this leaves a lingering question: Who will be the 14th team in the SEC?
As of right now, the 2012 season will see the SEC clash with only 13 teams, but with an almost certain guarantee of adding a 14th in the near future, though commissioner Michael Slive has thus far denied this.
So which teams would be the most exciting in relation to the Crimson Tide?
Currently, Missouri seems to be the front-runner for the SEC, but not exactly for 'Bama excitement. Though I grew up in Missouri (my mother called it "Misery") I harbor a strong dislike for Mizzou.
The Tigers are the most likely candidate due to the fact that they could open up a monstrous television market for the SEC, which would include St. Louis and Kansas City. Michael Slive is looking a lot like Dr. Evil right now.
Would Mizzou be exciting, though? They have a 12-16 bowl record and only 11 consensus All-Americans. How would they fare in the SEC West?
I'd expect every game the Tide played against Mizzou would be a snoozer. They have had mostly winning seasons under head coach Gary Pinkel since 2001, but the Big 12 was never considered the toughest conference in college football.
Another problem with Missouri joining would be the forced move of the Auburn Tigers from the SEC West to the East. The rivalry could still exist every year, but never in Week 12. Talk about lame.
My biggest issue with Mizzou is this: Do we really need another "Tigers" in the same league? I'd sure hate to see "Crimson Tide vs. Tigers" three times on a schedule.
Virginia Tech seems to be a team that can bring valid reasons for joining. They open up an untapped television market, and they are always a good team.
After a rocky start in 2010, they knocked off 10-straight wins, but lost to Stanford in a lopsided Orange Bowl battle.
I believe the Hokies would add a flavor that 'Bama fans would prefer over the podunk possum chowder Missouri would offer.
The final team that seems like it would be a great fit is the Clemson--ick--Tigers. Yea, I have an issue with them being "Tigers" as well. We also don't need another "Death Valley" in the SEC.
The upside is that Clemson is the traditional in-state rival of the South Carolina Gamecocks, but they don't play as often as they should, much akin to the Florida-Florida State rivalry.
The addition of Clemson would also keep Auburn in the SEC West.
There is a glaring issue with Clemson, however. Regardless of how much SEC fans would like to add them, it probably won't fly due to the fact that it would open up no new television markets. South Carolina is already in the SEC.
The SEC is a money-making organization, and since they "pay" the players peanuts via athletic scholarships, it's almost all profit.
I have every doubt in my mind that the SEC has no desire to add a 14th team.
Someone will join, but who will it be?
