Texas A&M Football: Will Texas Be Forced to Play Texas A&M?
Texas A&M will begin playing football in the Southeastern Conference next fall.
Since A&M has moved to a new conference, Texas has threatened to end the rivalry game with the Aggies.
According to Texas athletic director Deloss Dodds, scheduling the Aggies will be problematic.
The Aggies have said they are still willing to play Texas every year despite playing in the murderers row that is the SEC West division.
When it looked like Texas A&M would not follow Texas to the Pac-10 in the summer of 2010, Texas threatened to never play A&M in any sport. It appears that with his latest comments Dodds is trying to make those threats a reality.
Evidently when you do not do what Texas thinks you should do, they take their ball and go home.
Texas state Sen. Tommy Williams is going to do everything within his power to keep the rivalry going.
"Sen. Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands) has announced plans to file legislation during the 83rd legislative session to instruct both Texas A&M and the University of Texas to continue their long-standing Thanksgiving rivalry football game. Representative John Otto will sponsor the legislation in the Texas House.
"This football series began in 1894, and I don't think it's time to stop this rivalry," said Sen. Williams. "The game has served as an important family tradition for millions of Texans throughout the century, and it's important we preserve this great tradition."
"
It seems rather petty to end a 100-year rivalry because one school decided to switch conferences.
This is just another example of the arrogance and sense of entitlement that emanates out of Austin. Texas feels they should be able to tell everyone else what to do. If you do not abide by Texas' wishes then they will "punish" you by refusing to play you.
The sad reality is that the fans of both schools are the ones who end up getting punished.
Hopefully, this can be solved without the state government interfering.
Disagreements in college athletics should be decided on the field, not in the state capitol building.
