BCS Rankings: LSU vs. Alabama Game Guarantees BCS Title Game Will Be Letdown

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Allow me to resurrect that dead horse just so I can beat him down again. It is time to talk BCS rankings, NCAA playoffs and why I am a very frustrated college football fan.

I love college football. I can even get on board with the ubiquitous polls and rankings. They give us fans a reason to discuss, argue and opine.

Aside from conference standings, they are a temperature of where teams sit on a national level. There is a big but to that sentiment, though.

There is no justice in college football. With no playoff system, we are forced to buy into the BCS rankings as gospel, and my eyes tell me that just isn't true.

Current State of Affairs

Here is where I see the national stage. The top two teams, in my not so humble opinion, are LSU and Alabama.

Both teams are the penultimate in defense and have their dynamic weapons on the other side of the ball as well. This is the game I want to see in January, but will have to settle for something far less.

Before I continue, I understand that things change. Teams flourish; others squander their talent. As of right here and right now, these are the two best teams in the nation. Yes, I have taken into account Oklahoma and stick by my assessment.

I can't get over the Crimson Tide, their line and rushing attack. Trent Richardson is getting better with every game, and that is a scary proposition for the rest of the nation.

LSU, for their part, have been the most battle-tested squad, and continue to pass with flying colors. Without their proposed opening day starting quarterback, the Tigers have flourished.

Day of Days

The worst thing a collegiate football team can do on their way to a title is lose a game late in the year. This is guaranteed to happen to either Alabama and LSU when they square off on Nov. 5, just one week after the BCS Rankings are released.

Alabama will see Mississippi State, Georgia Southern and Auburn after that game. LSU gets Western Kentucky and Ole Miss.

While the Tigers get Arkansas at the end of the season, both do not have the big game that would put them back in the picture after a late-season loss.

We are looking at a title game that will feature only one of the two best teams in the nation.

Conclusion

I again have to stress the elephant in the room. Things change. Oklahoma could win me over as the best team in the nation by season's end.

Boise State can convince me that they should have a say in the national spotlight. There is plenty of time and room for things to change.

The point I make is that there is no justice in college football. Both Alabama and LSU deserve to have a shot at the title if they remain perfect, save that fine day for fans on Nov. 5.

That one day will essentially eliminate one of these two fine teams. Now I ask you: Where is the justice in that?
