Mayweather vs Ortiz: Money Should Man Up and Fight Pacquiao or Retire
Floyd Mayweather defeated Victor Ortiz last weekend to move his career record to 42-0, and boxing fans are still talking about the controversial finish to the bout. Mayweather only has one question left to answer after that win–can he beat Manny Pacquiao? If he doesn't want to tackle that question, he should just retire.
Ben Maller of Yahoo! Sports posted a report that the bout could happen in Hawaii sometime over the next two years.
"Michael Green, a Hawaiian-based attorney, is working to bring boxing's showcase to Hawaii. Green tells KGMB that he has a signed letter from Pacquiao and his attorney that shows the boxers interest in fighting in Hawaii in 2012 or 2013. Of course that fight could pit Pacman against anyone, but Green is angling to make it a fight with Mayweather.
"
While the fight venue would only hold about 60,000 spectators as opposed to nearly 100,000 at Cowboys Stadium, boxing fans wouldn't care if the two men stepped in a ring on the moon at this point.
Money has halted all previous negotiations by attempting to force Pacquiao to submit to Olympic-style drug testing prior to the fight. That demand has caused the Filipino's camp to walk away from the discussions, leaving an estimated $25 million in guaranteed money on the table.
The whole situation makes Pretty Boy look weak. It seems like the undefeated champion is ducking Pac-Man because he fears losing. Only Mayweather knows whether that is the reality of the situation or not, though.
Pacquiao has a Nov. 11 fight with Juan Manuel Marquez for the WBO world welterweight title. After that, talks with the Mayweather camp could conceivably heat back up again. The money is there and the demand is definitely there, but with each passing month the fight become less and less likely.
The problem for Mayweather moving forward is that the world knows he can destroy inferior opponents. So his draw will continue to decrease if he doesn't fight Pacquiao. Other than the diehard boxing community, nobody wants to see a rematch against Victor Ortiz.
The only fight the people want is Pac-Man vs. Money.
And if Mayweather is too scared to take on that task, it's time for him to hang up the gloves and call it a career. It will be an incomplete career, but a great one nevertheless.
