UFC 135 Results: What's Next for the Losers
UFC 135 hosted several matchups featuring heavy favorites, including UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones over Quinton Jackson and Josh Koscheck over Matt Hughes.
Both Jones and Koscheck won their fights and had little to no trouble in doing so. Jones submitted Jackson in the fourth round of their bout, and Koscheck knocked out Hughes in the very first round of their welterweight matchup.
Other main card winners include heavyweights Travis Browne and Mark Hunt along with lightweight standout Nate Diaz.
For the losers, some could see their UFC careers coming to an end while others will need to reestablish themselves in their respective divisions.
This is what should be next for them.
Takanori Gomi Loses to Nate Diaz by Submission in Round 1
1 of 5Pride superstar Takanori Gomi is 1-3 in the UFC with all three of his losses coming to some of the very best in the division, including Clay Guida and Kenny Florian.
His most recent defeat came to Nate Diaz in the opening bout at UFC 135. After being outboxed for the majority of the first round, Gomi was eventually submitted with an armbar in the last minute.
With the UFC heading to Japan in February 2012, Gomi might get another chance to showcase the skills many have come to know him for when he was a premier lightweight fighter several years ago.
The loser of the upcoming Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon fight at UFC 136 could be a fight that many fans would love to see. At this point, Gomi has no real chance of making a run for the title, but he can still put on entertaining fights with the rest of the stacked 155-pound division.
Rob Broughton Loses to Travis Browne by Unanimous Decision
2 of 5Rob Broughton fell to 15-6-1 after losing a clear decision to undefeated heavyweight Travis Browne in the second bout on the card.
The heavyweight bout fell short of expectations, but Broughton did make it farther than many had anticipated. Browne had been coming off a knockout win over Stefan Struve and looked like a dangerous threat for the fighter from England.
Broughton survived long enough to go the distance, but it was a lackluster performance on both fighters' parts.
At 1-1 in the UFC, Broughton will get another shot in the UFC, and a fight with Christian Morecraft, who recently lost to Matt Mitrione in June, could be his next chance to get a win.
Ben Rothwell Loses to Mark Hunt by Unanimous Decision
3 of 5After more than a year out of the cage, Ben Rothwell returned to the UFC to take on former kickboxing champion Mark Hunt.
Hunt surprised many with his upset victory over Rothwell after winning a unanimous decision and extending his record to 7-7.
Rothwell looked exhausted throughout the bout and offered up little to no offense in the bout. After a competitive first round, he was dominated for the following two. At some points, he had to put his hands on his knees in mid-action during the rounds.
Like Broughton, Rothwell put up a disappointing performance and can take on the loser of the upcoming Stefan Struve vs. Pat Barry bout.
Matt Hughes Loses to Josh Koscheck by KO in Round 1
4 of 5UFC Hall of Famer and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes wanted to leave on a win but came up short in his co-main event fight with Josh Koscheck, who knocked him out at 4:59 of Round 1.
With the loss, Hughes wouldn't admit if he was going to retire but asked the UFC to put his career on hold for the time being.
At the post-fight press conference, Dana White said the 37-year-old is probably going to retire but just doesn't want to admit it.
If they do decide to give him one more fight to go out on, maybe he can seek redemption against Dennis Hallman, who defeated Hughes twice before he was ever a UFC champion.
Quinton Jackson Loses to Jon Jones by Submission in Round 4
5 of 5Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is a former UFC light heavyweight champion, and he was finished for the first time in the UFC after Jon Jones submitted him while retaining his title in the fourth round of their fight.
It was only the third loss in the last six years of Jackson's career, and he called out Mauricio "Shogun" Rua for next year's Japan show in February.
With Shogun being scheduled to face Dan Henderson later this year, that match might not come to fruition.
There are no opponents that make sense for Jackson at the moment, but he can face prospects like Phil Davis or take a rematch with Forrest Griffin, who defeated him in 2008.
The rematches with Shogun and Griffin are two he would accept, and they are ones that could get him back on the winning track.
