Ravens vs. Rams: 5 Halftime Adjustments the Rams Should Make

David HeebSep 25, 2011

The Baltimore Ravens have taken the St. Louis Rams out behind the wood shed for a good old country whipping.  They have gashed the Rams defense for several big plays, and their defense is playing up to its "all time great" reputation.

Here are five things the Rams can do to get back into the second half.

1. Give Up on the Run: I don't think the Rams are going to gain a ton of rushing yards on the Ravens; not with Mt. Cody and Ngata plugging the middle. Those guys could make average linebackers look good. Just imagine how good they make Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs look!  Every rushing attempt is a wasted down, plain and simple. The Rams need to go no huddle and pass, pass, pass.

2. Take More Chance on Offense: When you are facing Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, you know you are facing a Hall of Fame caliber defense. Those long, 15 play, time consuming drives are going to be hard to come by. It's just a fact! To beat the Ravens, and to keep them honest, you have to take some chances down the field.

The Ravens' secondary is beat up. You have to give guys like Danario Alexander and Mike Sims-Walker a chance to make a play down the field. Look at how the Ravens used their rookie wide receiver, Torrey Smith, for crying out loud! Where is that in the Rams offense? You can't make explosive plays if you don't even attempt to throw the ball down the field.

3. Blitz, Blitz and Blitz Some More: Ravens QB Joe Flacco has a cannon for an arm, and he is an accurate passer. He could make a good corner look bad. The Rams' biggest weakness is the fact that their corners are awful. So Flacco is pretty much having his way with the Rams' secondary. The only chance the Rams have is to blitz the Ravens from every angle. They need to send linebackers, safeties, corners, etc... Send everything but the kitchen sink! You have to hope that Flacco gets tired of getting hit, and that eventually he makes a couple of costly mistakes with the ball.

4. Somebody, for Goodness' Sake, Please Cover Torrey Smith: Did I mention that the Rams' secondary was horrible? So far today, safety Darian Stewart has been burned on the deep pass four times. A couple of times, Flacco overthrew his target, but both times he did connect, it was for a long touchdown. Stewart started in place of Craig Dahl, another Rams player who has underwhelmed so far this season. And do we absolutely have to cover Smith with Jimmy King? I mean, is that the best the Rams can do? Because Smith is beating King like a drum right now.

5. PROTECT SAM BRADFORD! The Rams' offensive line should be ashamed of themselves.  Rams' Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels should donate his weekly paycheck to charity.  These guys are going to get Sam Bradford killed. The Ravens are bringing pressure, the Rams look confused and Bradford is taking a lot of punishment.  On more than one play, I saw Bradford with "The Manning Face" in the first half, where his body language pretty much said "This is Bull****."  This is not a good sign!  I don't know that I've ever seen Bradford so frustrated.

I know the Ravens are one of the best teams in the NFL, but there is no excuse for the way the Rams are playing. Through the first 10 quarters of this season, the Rams have played sloppy football. They are beating themselves. Coach Steve Spagnulo had better get this team pointed in the right direction, or his seat is about to start heating up.
