Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao: Really?
At times, we want things so much that we fail to see it as it really isโa carrot on a stick. This is also the case when people push for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, that isย never going to happen.
While no fightย could be this spectacular since King Kong vs. Godzilla, the probability of it ever happening within the short window where any fight involving these aging boxers would be worth watching, is zero.
Floydโs business plan does not include engaging Pacquiao. No goading, name-calling or persuading will change it. If his amoral display of wealth is any indication, then there will always be gulls paying to see him fight whoever sits across from him.

Floyd doesnโt even feign compunction about grabbing a loserโs buck, so why should we?
Everything is legal (no pun intended here).ย For as long as tabs are paid,ย everyone has the prerogative to buy tickets with his money. According to Sky Sports, Floyd said:
"With or without Pacquiao any time Floyd Mayweather goes out there he is going to make $70 million. I don't need him."
Arum, whether we like him or not, was dead on about it years ago, as told by Boxing Scene:
"I always felt that [Mayweather] wasn't going to do the fight."
At some point, the reality has to sink in. Enough with the chicken and egg argument already. We need to see how bruised boxing enthusiasts have become, as we are itching to see the fight and move on already.
Here is the original transcript of the interview with George Petersonโthe trainer of Paul Williams.
Williams is managed by Al Haymon, who is also the manager of Floyd Mayweather Jr. This interview took place on December 2, 2009:
BoxingInsider: Who do you see winning Pacquiao vs. Floyd?
Peterson: โItโs not gonna happen.โ
BoxingInsider: You donโt think so?
Peterson: โNo.โ
BoxingInsider: Why not?
Peterson: โItโs not a fight thatโs meant to be made. That fightโs just not meant to be made.โ
BoxingInsider: Why not? Everyone wants to see it?
Peterson: โA lot of people want to see it but theyโre not gonna see it.โ
BoxingInsider: Mayweather doesnโt want it does he?
Peterson: โAh, that fight is not gonna be made.โ
BoxingInsider: Youโre saying it with a lot of certainty in your voice.
Peterson: โYes sir. Yes sir. If it was gonna be made it would be made by now.โ
BoxingInsider: Who doesnโt want to pull the trigger?
Peterson: โI just donโt see it being made.โ
BoxingInsider: You know something but wonโt say it.
Peterson: [Smiles].
BoxingInsider: Who would win, if it was made? Just for fun?
Peterson: โItโs not gonna be made. That fight is not gonna be made.โ
BoxingInsider: I hear you, itโs not even worth wasting the energy on a fight that is fantasy.
Peterson: โItโs not gonna happen.โ
Many would say that it's the greatest fight of all time. We should watch for some miraculous change of heart and just hope for the fight to happen.
The media mileage would last untilย Pacquiao and Mayweather would finally agree to fight.ย In the meantime, let's just swallow the fights they put up. Really? How long do we intend to run for that carrot on a stick?
Obviously, there will be those who would go to every Mayweather outing and pay for tickets. To them, my opinion will never be worth the savings on tickets to cheap tricks.
If they in any way feel that I have slighted them with this write up, or that I am wrong about thinking Pacquiao is the better person of the two, then my apologies. I would always respect their choice.
I love boxing too much to sit and watch idly, while someone tries to reduce it into a circus act. One thing is for sure though, Floyd Mayweather ought to thank those who make his business plan work by paying to see him clown.
While he may not be the perfect sportsman, Mayweather is, after all, truly a genius.
