Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M: Justin Blackmon Is Even Better Than Dez Bryant
In Mike Gundy's explosive offense at Oklahoma State, it provides plenty of opportunities for playmakers to be this good. Especially at the wide receiver position where Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden has made a living throwing to a pair of very talented wideouts.
One of those great Oklahoma State wide receivers was Dez Bryant, now a Dallas Cowboy. While Weeden only spent a couple of games getting to throw to Bryant in 2009, the guy that's currently Weeden's favorite target is something special too.
Bryant had a great career at Oklahoma State, but current Cowboys wide receiver Justin Blackmon is better.
First let's compare the two statistically.
Bryant: 26 games, 147 receptions, 2,425 yards, 29 touchdowns
Blackmon: 25 games, 162 receptions, 2,439 yards, 25 touchdowns.
Blackmon's best season came last year when he turned in a remarkable 111 catch 20-touchdown campaign, while Bryant's best collegiate season came in 2008 with an 87 catch 19-touchdown season.
Their numbers are very similar at this point in their careers, but that can be a little bit skewed. Bryant put up his monster numbers mostly with Zac Robinson under center for the Cowboys, while Blackmon has the luxury of playing with Weeden.
Given the choice, I'd go with Weeden every day of the week.
Their similarities don't end with just their production either.
Both are similar in body size. Bryant actually stands an inch taller at 6'2"and a few pounds heavier.
Both run good routes and were counted on to be big playmakers, which they have done. Even more impressive is that no matter what opposing defensive coordinators do to take them out of the game, they make plays anyway.
Both guys were also considered the best wide receiver in the nation while at Oklahoma State.
You can't go wrong with either guy, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with Blackmon.
Yes the offense helps, but Blackmon is on pace for back to back 100 catch seasons, dwarfing anything the talented Bryant ever accomplished at Oklahoma State.
Wide receivers just don't put up back to back seasons like Blackmon's in today's age of college football. He's simply that good.
Bryant was great while playing at Oklahoma State, but Blackmon is better. It's a simple choice to make.
