Florida vs. Kentucky: 5 Halftime Adjustments Gators Must Make
Florida comes into this SEC matchup as the No. 15 ranked team with an undefeated record of 3-0. The Gators look to keep their winning streak going after a big win vs. Tennessee last week.
The Gators have been the dominant team in the first half. Florida has had numerous big plays and has caused big turnovers. Florida is looking like the better team, but there is still 30 minutes for the outcome to change.
Here are five things Florida must do in the second half against Kentucky:
Commit to the Running Game
Florida will need to wear down the Kentucky defensive front seven with a steady diet of the running game. Get Chris Rainey more touches and it could force the Wildcats to put another player in the box. This is when Florida can strike big with one-on-one matchups with their speedy WRs.
More Gerald Christian
This is a matchup that the Gators need to continue exploit. The Kentucky LBs are having major issues in dealing with the explosive sophomore, and John Brantley needs to be delivering him the ball.
Once the running game gets on track, a play-action streak to Christian could lead to a big play for the Gators in the second half.
Get Jeff Demps the Ball in Space
Charlie Weis needs to call plays to get Jeff Demps the ball in space as much as possible. Whether it is on a RB sweep, a quick comeback at WR or a screen in the slot, Demps needs to get the ball in his hands as much as possible.
Kentucky has no answer to his pure athleticism and should continue to give them major problems throughout the second half.
Speed, Speed and More Speed
Continue using the speed advantage Florida has at the skill positions on offense. Kentucky is struggling keeping up with the noticeably faster Gator players.
Florida needs to exploit their speed against man coverage. Brantley needs to recognize man-coverage early and get the ball to his explosive playmakers.
More Blitzes on Defense
A textbook example of how the blitz can help the Gators defense was displayed on the Gators fourth touchdown of the game. The LB blindsided Pryor which caused the ball to fly in the air, leading to the touchdown by the D-lineman.
The Gators defense has done a good job limiting the Kentucky offense so far, and blitzes can help seal the game.
