Why Michigan's Denard Robinson Lead Heisman Trophy Race

Matt ShetlerSep 24, 2011

If his fourth quarter performance in Week 2 against Notre Dame wasn't convincing enough, all eyes should be tuned back onto Michigan's quarterback Denard Robinson when having any discussion having to do with the Heisman Trophy.

As a matter of fact, you can make the case that he has leapfrogged the likes of Andrew Luck and Landry Jones and is now the current front runner to capture the award.

Robinson electrified us a season ago, but this year is different.

For one, Michigan is winning.

He's not a guy right now that's just going to make a few highlight reel runs for a team that's going to only win three or four ballgames. Robinson is performing at a high level at the same time the Wolverines are winning. That goes for something.

Also take into consideration the change in offenses. Gone is Rich Rodriguez's spread, which featured Robinson as its top priority. In comes in a more pro-style attack under Brady Hoke, which forces Robinson to read more coverages and be more of a prototypical quarterback.

There were some doubts, but he's passed all the early tests proving he could thrive in a pro system.

While the offense is different, the results aren't.

Hoke isn't stupid and he calls Robinson's number more often than not.

In turn, Robinson has rewarded his coach by putting up some ridiculous numbers. Through the season's first three games, Robinson threw for 532 yards and added another 398 on the ground, combining for seven touchdowns.

Every Heisman Trophy winner needs that one moment in front of the entire nation. That one moment that will stick with people all year.

Robinson might have done that the second week of the season in Michigan's dramatic comeback win over Notre Dame. The first night game at the Big House. National television audience. It had the makings for something heroic to happen.

That was Robinson's time to shine and shine he did. Oddly enough though, he did it with his arm and not his legs, proving that he's becoming a complete quarterback at the college level.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon and all Robinson did was electrify again, rushing for 200-yards and three touchdowns in Michigan's 28-7 win over Hoke's former San Diego State team.

His numbers are off the page. His style of play leaves us with a wow moment almost every single week. Robinson is simply the most exciting player in college football today.

Add all that up and it's hard not to make the case that he belongs at the top of any Heisman Trophy list.
