Arkansas vs. Alabama: Why LSU Beats Both and Renders This Showdown Meaningless

Sean MerrimanSep 24, 2011

As college football fans prepare for a much-anticipated matchup between Alabama and Arkansas later on today, they keep one thing in mind.

These are not the two best teams in the SEC.

In fact, these aren't even the top two teams in the SEC West.

LSU has been the most impressive team in the country after three weeks of the college football season, and the Tigers' have given everyone reason to believe that they are the "team to beat" as it stands right now in the SEC.

Two of the Tigers' three wins have come against ranked teams, including a 40-27 manhandling of then No.3-ranked Oregon in the opening week of the college football season. LSU's defense has been nothing short of spectacular, and while the same can be said about Alabama's defensive unit, the Tide have played two cupcake games in their first three contests of the season.

Arkansas on the other hand, has arguably the most talented group of receivers in the country, but with an unproven quarterback under center, those receivers could have trouble going up against any good SEC defense, such as Alabama and LSU. On defense, the Razorbacks gave up 28 points to a below-average Troy team last week.

The point here is that despite all the hype that this Alabama vs. Arkansas game has been getting heading into this week, it really does not hold much meaning because LSU should beat both of these teams when they play.

On the offensive side of the ball, LSU has experience at quarterback with Jarrett Lee, which neither Alabama nor Arkansas can say. On the defensive side of the ball, LSU has shown to be the top unit in the country and have the athletes and experience to shut down both of these offenses.

If the old saying of "defense wins championships" holds true, it would be tough to see LSU going down to either of these teams, or anyone in the SEC for that matter.

So as fans suit up from head to toe in red and white this afternoon in anticipation for Alabama and Arkansas to duke it out on the field, remember this-- The winner can celebrate in the immediate future, but that win certainly doesn't mean an SEC West title as long as LSU is waiting in the wings.
