College Football: Why LaMichael James and Trent Richardson Won't Win the Heisman

Martha CoppJun 7, 2018

Oregon's LaMichael James and Alabama's Trent Richardson are two of the nation's top running backs, yet you won't hear either of their names called to accept the coveted Heisman trophy.

There is no denying each player's talent on the field, but there are several factors that will prevent James or Richardson from winning.

To begin, let's start with James. His stats are certainly impressive, leading the nation with over 1,700 rushing yards last season.

However, Oregon has an outstanding running offense. This will hurt James, as freshman De'Anthony Thomas is sure to contribute to the Ducks' offense. Once Kenjon Barner recovers from his ankle injury, he will also add to the running game. James will have to share carries this season.

That being said, it will be difficult for James to repeat his success from last year. Many believe that after watching James tire out at the end of the season, coach Chip Kelly will take advantage of Thomas and Barner in November.

James looked exhausted toward the end of the season, as he took the bulk of the carries with Barner injured.

Also, James has a criminal blemish that may drive voters away. James was suspended the first game of the 2010 season with a misdemeanor harassment charge.

Allegedly, he tried to strangle his girlfriend during a heated argument. James plead guilty to the misdemeanor, though it was discussed that he would have received an assault charge if he went to trial.

All of these factors will make it increasingly difficult for James to win the Heisman.

Regarding Richardson, he is clearly one of the best running back in the SEC. Replacing Mark Ingram, Richardson has already recorded eight touchdowns for the season.

However, he hasn't played against any top-tier defenses yet. It will be interesting to see what happens when he starts in conference play (Alabama faces Arkansas today at 3:30 p.m.).

Also, Richardson has yet to be the lone starter for the Crimson Tide. After splitting time with Ingram, he could wear out as the season progresses.

Finally, Alabama is passing more frequently, which could hinder Richardson from racking up his statistics as much as possible.

When it comes down to it, James and Richardson are certainly candidates for the Heisman; there's no denying it. However, two little words will prevent either from winning:

Andrew Luck.
