Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Money May Has Nothing More to Accomplish but Beat Pacquiao
Coming off his win over Victor Ortiz, it would seem that there is nothing left for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. to prove in the sport of boxing.
That would be true, but with one small caveat. He has accomplished all he can in the sport except for beating Manny Pacquiao.
This is true particularly in the eyes of boxing fans. Many feel that Mayweather has been ducking Pacquiao by hiding behind drug tests and scheduling conflicts.
The controversial ending to the Ortiz fight, right or wrong, doesn't improve his public perception at all. Nothing short of scheduling a fight with Pacquiao will make Mayweather any better in the eyes of fans.
For boxing fans, the marquee fight will finally settle the argument over which fighter is the better man.
That roadblock is the last one in the way of Mayweather being considered a true great. He has beaten quick fighters, heavy hitters, and most recently after the win over Ortiz, he has beaten younger, stronger fighters.
The win over Ortiz was seen as something of a certainty coming into the fight to some, but there was some doubt in the minds of others.
Ortiz possesses many of the tools that were thought to be Mayweather's kryptonite.
He is younger, bigger and stronger. Many of Mayweather's victories prior to his fight were over opponents his age or older, like Shane Mosley and Oscar DeLaHoya, or of a smaller size like Ricky Hatton.
Ortiz was said to be all of the things that Mayweather had not overcome.
Now, all that is left to overcome is Pacquiao. It's just anyone's guess as to whether that fight will ever happen.
