TNA Impact Wrestling: Please Remove the Television Title From Eric Young
As I watched TNA Impact Wrestling last night, I was thought of how badly the company needs a mid-card title.
Guys like Matt Morgan, members of Fortune, Bully Ray, and countless others could benefit from holding a mid-card title before they make the transition to main event status.
Then I remembered TNA has the Television Championship.
Almost immediately, I realized something—the title is a complete joke. But it t wasn’t always like that.
Let’s take a quick look at the history of the title.
Created toward the end of 2008 by Booker T, it was known as the TNA Legends Championship at the time. Booker announced he had made the title so he could defend it against fellow legends and younger stars to prove his greatness.
As the Legends Title, it went to Kevin Nash twice, Mick Foley and A.J. Styles. It appeared every week on television and was defended on a regular basis.
Eric Young then won the title in October 2009, and it was renamed the Global Championship. Young was a heel and refused to defend the title against an American wrestler or on American soil.
This made the title quite sought after. Wrestlers wanted it, but they couldn’t have it.
Young eventually lost the title to Rob Terry in England. Terry defended the belt against all comers and lost the title to A.J. Styles in the summer of 2010.
As soon as Styles got a hold of it, he renamed the title the Television Championship.
From there, Douglas Williams, Abyss and Gunner held the title. Like before, it appeared every week on television and was defended on a regular basis.
Then came Eric Young and his current gimmick. He defeated Gunner for the title in May of this year and since then, the title has become a complete joke.
The belt was already on the verge of laughter seeing as it went through three different names in its short existence, but Young as the current title holder, put it over the line.
All Young has done since winning the title is run around with it. He’s had it for four months and I can only remember him defending it twice.
Young barely appears on television and when he does, it’s in the form of some ridiculous backstage segment.
Recently, he was seen running around Hollywood looking to wrestle Scott Baio. In his character’s mind, since he’s the Television Champion, Young must defend the title against television stars because he is now one.
Why not run around backstage looking for other wrestlers? Well, he did a few weeks ago.
He approached Robbie E and randomly gave him a title shot. They had a pretty good match, up until Young inserted his usual comedy—he stripped off his tights to reveal he was wearing Robbie’s tights.
For me, that killed the match. Young retained the belt but was attacked by Robbie’s new associate, Rob Terry. I figured we’d see more of this develop in the coming weeks but neither of the three wrestlers have been seen on television since.
Eric Young’s character doesn’t deserve a title, but Eric Young does. Young has been with TNA since the beginning. He has paid his dues, is good in the ring, and can handle a microphone. He deserves a title of some kind.
His character does not, though. His character is a joke. At most, a character like that should have title matches to get fans interested, but should never win a belt.
The TNA Television Championship could become a legit mid-card title. The company should handle it like they did in the glory days of the National Wrestling Alliance.
The title should be defended every week on television. This would give the belt some legitimacy and give wrestlers who haven’t been on the show in a while a chance to wrestle for the fans.
The first step, though, is taking the title off Eric Young. I plead to TNA that they do so. I don’t think he should lose it, I think he should be stripped of the title.
Occasionally, a rule like this is enforced when a wrestler hasn't defended a title for 30 days. It hasn’t been 30 days since Eric Young defended against Robbie E, but TNA should take the title from him when that day comes.
TNA should then hold a huge tournament featuring wrestlers who aren’t in the main event picture.
If I had my way, I’d give the title to Matt Morgan. He’s more then ready for a singles title and the TV Title could be a good stepping stone to the World Title.
If Eric Young dropped the ridiculous gimmick, I’d be fine with him as champion. I would prefer to see someone else get the belt, though.
There are so many wrestlers on TNA’s roster that have nothing to do. A lot of them take a back seat to current story lines because they are not involved.
Why not put the Television Title in a legit story line?
Guys like Morgan, D’Angelo Dinero, and Samoa Joe get lost in the fold because they’re not Kurt Angle, Sting, or Hulk Hogan. If TNA makes the Television Title important, the possibilities are endless.
I’d much rather see Morgan and Joe fight over a title instead of them fighting over the fact that Joe is pissed at the world.
Please, TNA, take the title off of Eric Young and make it into a title that the wrestlers want to fight for.
