WWE News: CM Punk Responds to Triple H's UFC Comment, 'That's Absolutely Insane'

Gone Baby GoneJun 7, 2018

Yes, Punk and Triple H are involved in an on-air angle. However, I don't feel that CM Punks' latest comments about the "COO's" attack on UFC are a part of it.

According to mmafighting.com, the "straight-edge superstar" was recently interviewed by Ariel Helwani on "The MMA Hour" podcast/radio show.

During the interview, Punk was asked to weigh in on Triple H's recent comments about the UFC needing to evolve.

During the interview, Punk had the following statements to make:

"

Triple H just doesn't get mixed martial arts. he doesn't watch it either

Saying the UFC needs to evolve, I guess he's not wrong, but I think he's missing the picture that UFC is evolving. There's only one other sport entity in the world that has production rights to their own material on network and that's the NFL. UFC has just bartered a huge deal [with FOX]. That's evolution.

"

I have to agree with Punk here, as the UFC has legitimized itself during its short existence. I remember watching the early years of UFC, where they would have guys from different backgrounds face off. No one had a "uniform." Guys came in wearing karate gi's and some wore street clothes, while others dressed similar to what we see today.

UFC boss Dana White made sure there was some sort of similar attire for the competitors so they would stop looking like a sideshow. This allowed UFC to market itself better and land its first deal with Spike TV.

Obviously, after the Spike shows proved successful, many networks kept a close eye to see what would come of it.

Punk seems to understand how UFC affects the WWE's bottom line. For years many people, including Vince McMahon, have not looked at UFC as competition. Yes, they are two different entities; however, they draw a similar fanbase.

Punk had the following to say on the matter:

"

I wouldn't say [MMA has] 'hurt' us, I think that might be a little harsh of a term, but to deny that UFC is our competition is a little ridiculous.

Cirque du Soleil is our competition. Mad Men and Breaking Bad is our competition. I think everything that people spend their time on and their money on is our competition and to blatantly say that mixed martial arts has no barring on what's good or bad in our business, is silly; it's close-minded. You're putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound.

UFC is entertainment. WWE is entertainment.

And regards to people spending their money on it. It's definitely a competition. I think the way things are in our economy, there's a billion pay-per-views between UFC, [other MMA pay-per-views] and the WWE, we're competing for each other's dollars, absolutely.

"

In the past couple of years the UFC and WWE have had pay-per-view events on the same weekend. This makes the consumer choose which is more important for them to spend their money on. Sometimes WWE wins. Other times, UFC wins.

If Triple H really believes that the UFC has ways to go, he has another thing coming. As. I think it's safe to say that UFC and MMA has been one of the fastest growing sports in American history.

Personally, I feel that the WWE brass realizes that the UFC poses a threat to their bottom line. Although they may not be competition in the traditional sense of the word, they are garnering serious attention from fight fans of all ages.

Essentially, the WWE needs to keep their eyes open and hopefully they will be able to have continued success and evolve.
