Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Why Ortiz Should Give Up on a Rematch with Money

Jun 4, 2018

In boxing, rematches are a lot like Hollywood sequels. They exist so people can see more of the same, and they also exist to rake in more money than the original.

If now-former WBC Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz could have his way, he would have a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future. Last Saturday, Mayweather defeated him via a fourth-round knockout that has been the subject of all sorts of controversy. Whether you want to call them cheap shots, sucker punches or clean hits, there was something just not quite right about Mayweather's knockout blows.

Because of that, Ortiz didn't mind telling it like it is during an interview with TMZ on Thursday. He essentially accused Mayweather of not fighting like a true champion, and that he is thus "unworthy" of being called a champion.

The only way Mayweather can be worthy, in Ortiz's opinion, is if he agrees to and wins a rematch.

In a Hollywood movie, this is where they would cue the dramatic music.

In real life, there's nothing even remotely dramatic about this, much less surprising. No matter how you feel about Mayweather's think-fast punches, it's understandable that Ortiz would feel wronged. To use his words, he felt that the ending of his bout with Mayweather was "unjust," so of course he would want to set the record straight.

Understandable, yes. But realistic? Not really.

While the bout may have been a disappointment for Ortiz, Mayweather got pretty much everything he wanted out of it. He got back in the ring after a long layoff, he upped his record to 42-0 and he got a belt in the process. He also got paid an awful lot of money.

So while there is incentive for Ortiz to seek a rematch, there's virtually no incentive for Mayweather to agree to one. With Ortiz in his wake, he will look to move on to bigger and better things. That could be a bout with Amir Khan, which Khan himself insists (per The Guardian) is going to happen. Or, in a perfect world, it could be a bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Regardless of who Mayweather's next opponent is, it will be a bout in which the stakes will be upped from both a simple boxing perspective and a monetary perspective. And rest assured, Mayweather has options.

If Ortiz really wants to, he can keep pining for a rematch. He might get one in the future, but it will be when Mayweather wants it to happen.

In the meantime, Ortiz is wasting his breath.
