Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Cheap Shot Proves Boxing Will Never Be Relevant Again
Boxing is not a real sport anymore.
How can you take a "sport" seriously, when the biggest bout of the year is a complete joke?
Why would anyone want to pay $60 to watch the "best" boxer in the world cheap shot his opponent to earn a victory that feels and looks just as cheap?
Sure, you can blame it on the referee, like UFC president Dana White.
"The referee destroyed that fight," White said. "It's easy to hate Floyd Mayweather, but Floyd didn't do anything. He didn't act like a thug."
I don’t know who is calling Mayweather a thug—I don’t believe that is true—but I do believe the sport in which he competes is an absolute joke, and he has made it that way.
Another reason why boxing will never be relevant again? Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s refusal to fight one another.
This would be the equivalent of the best team in the NFC and AFC refusing to meet in the Super Bowl; the best team in the Eastern and Western Conferences in hockey and basketball refusing to meet in the finals; Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic refusing to face each other in a Grand Slam.
The fact that they have the option to avoid one another and never put anything at risk is complete poppycock.
Why should anyone consider either of them the best when they are scared to face one another?
Just because they can beat up on a bunch of scrubs and talk a lot of smack does not make them the best.
If boxing wants to get serious and become relevant again in America, a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight must go down. There is simply no other way to go about it.
Let’s hope, for the sport's sake, that it happens soon.
