Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Vicious Victor to Blame for Cheap Shot Fiasco
Floyd Mayweather is addicted to himself, and rather than fight the addiction, Victor Ortiz became an enabler.
Mayweather has come under the most fire for his role in the cheap shot fiasco that ended his bout with Ortiz, but perhaps he isn’t the one to blame.
They always say that you shouldn’t enable an addict, but that is exactly what Ortiz did for Mayweather. He enabled him to take the cheap shot that ended the fight, stirred the pot and kept Mayweather at the center of controversy.
More importantly, he allowed Mayweather to stay the center of attention.
He handed the fight on a silver platter to Mayweather in the fourth round. Sure, Ortiz wasn’t winning the fight by any stretch of the imagination, but he was sticking in there and getting a few good shots in.
He had Mayweather up against the ropes and was putting a great pummeling on him, but then he threw it all away.
We will all talk about the knockout punch from Mayweather as the cheap shot, but let’s not forget about the headbutt that started the whole fiasco.
I’ve been adamant in my criticism towards Mayweather and I won't change my stance. He continues to run his mouth about how he’s the best ever, but then why did he need a cheap shot to beat Ortiz?
I think the way the fight ended was despicable and it was a huge black eye on boxing. Mayweather played a huge role in it, but it’s time to go back to the source.
Without Ortiz’s headbutt we would never be talking about any of this.
Sure, Mayweather finished the fight with a cheap shot, but it was Ortiz that set him up.
The aftermath of the headbutt was almost worse. Ortiz seemed to care more about apologizing than fighting, and through that, he gave Mayweather the distinct advantage that he needed.
He should have admitted he was wrong, taken the point doc, hit gloves and continued. This isn’t little league tee ball, its boxing.
In the end, he enabled Mayweather by not paying attention and not protecting himself at all times.
If you’re going to give a guy like Money Mayweather a clear shot at knocking you out, he’s going to take it no matter the ramifications to his image.
Mayweather doesn’t care about his image. He just wants to be talked about, he wants to be heard, and he wants to be the center of attention.
Mayweather is addicted to himself, and rather than put him in his place, Ortiz gave him exactly what he wanted.
