San Diego State vs. Michigan: TV Schedule, Radio, Game Time and More

Eric BowmanSep 21, 2011

Michigan Wolverines new head coach Brady Hoke will host his former team, the San Diego Aztecs, this weekend, and just because they're not an AQ school it doesn't mean the Aztecs aren't any good.

Hoke has proven so far that he was a good hire for the Wolverines, but there is still a lot of time left in the season. A true Michigan man, Hoke has this team believing they're something special, which is exactly what the current group of players needed.

The Aztecs have talent thanks to Hoke, and they really want to stick it to their former coach for dropping them for a bigger program.

With that said, let's dig into some specifics of this Week 4 matchup.

When: Saturday, Sept. 24, 12:00 p.m. ET

Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI

Watch: Big Ten Network

Listen: KOGO 600 AM in San Diego, WTKA  in Ann Arbor

Betting Line

According to bodog.com, the Wolverines are favored at -11. Michigan's defense isn't the best out there, and because the Aztecs have a high-powered offense with strong talent at all the skill positions, this game may be closer than one would think. The Wolverines are definitely on upset alert.

Michigan Injury Report

Running back Fitzgerald Toussaint missed the Notre Dame game, but returned last week in a limited role, and he is expected to be up to speed this weekend. Linebackers Cam Gordon and Brandon Herron missed last week, but they are expected to play against the Aztecs, but it is unknown if they will start and play significant minutes.

San Diego State Injury Report

Senior safety Brandon Davis will wear a neck brace for another week after bruising it during the win over Army in Week 2, and he is doubtful for the game against the Wolverines.

BCS/Top 25 Poll Implications

The Wolverines jumped into the rankings after their third consecutive win, but a loss this weekend would definitely drop them from No. 22 to unranked.

The Aztecs have received a few votes, but they still haven't proved they're worthy of being ranked. An impressive win over Michigan and they should move into the rankings.

What They're Saying

Houston Nutt knows a thing or two about playing former teams, and once he heard the Hoke downplayed facing his former team, he told ESPN's Michael Rothstein that it's going to hit Hoke hard.

"

'He won't realize it,' Nutt said. 'But he'll wake up, and it'll be the most difficult week because of all the ties...You say it's just another game, another kick, but it's more than that. It's a little bit deeper than you think.'

"

This will be an emotional game for Hoke, but the trick for him is to not show it at all and to get out there and coach the Wolverines to a victory.

New head coach for the Aztecs, Rocky Long, told reporters that it doesn't matter who the coach is because it's up to the players. Per FOXSports

"

I think our team is excited about playing at Michigan against a really good Michigan team in front of a lot of people. I think they're excited about that.

I don't think who the coach is has any factor whatsoever. Brady did a good job as head coach here, and he's going to do a good job as head coach there, but coaches don't play. Players play.

"

He's right in that sense, but it sure does help to have a more experienced coach prepare you for an intense matchup. The practices leading up to a game are very important and often overlooked.

Michigan Player to Watch

This obviously has to be Denard Robinson because of his dual-threat ability. However, another reason to watch him, other than the exciting plays, is to see if he can avoid turning the ball over. Robinson has already thrown four interceptions on the year, which has put Michigan in some tough spots.

San Diego State Player to Watch

Sophomore running back Ronnie Hillman is second in the nation in rushing yards with 497, and in the last two games, the Wolverines have given up an average of 202 total rushing yards. Hillman is a fantastic back with great speed that could easily do a lot of damage to the Wolverines.

Key Matchup

The sub-par Michigan defense vs. the attacking Aztec offense is what you need to watch for. Senior quarterback Ryan Lindley has greatly improved over the last four years, and even though he is adjusting to new starting receivers, the kid can still throw the ball very well.

Look for Lindley and Hillman to lead the way for the Aztecs, and with what we've seen from the Wolverines so far this season, San Diego State shouldn't have trouble moving the ball down the field. The key will be to make the big stops in the important moments of the game, which is something Michigan has struggled with over the last couple of years.

Key Storyline

As mentioned before, the best storyline of this Week 4 matchup is Brady Hoke facing his former team. The Aztecs want to win to convince not just Hoke but also themselves that they're fine without him.

It will be tough for Hoke at first, but he's a strong guy and he'll fight through it to help the Wolverines get a victory.

Prediction

Denard Robinson will be running wild as usual, but he has to keep the ball to himself. Not turning the ball over is key for Robinson, especially since his opponents are very capable of putting points on the board.

In the end, the Wolverines' defense will make crucial stops late in the game and the Wolverines will run the clock out for the win. However, if needed, we all know that Robinson has the clutch gene to help Michigan comeback. That shouldn't be necessary, but you never know.
