NFL Picks Week 3: Which Favorites Are Sure to Drop the Ball?

John RozumSep 21, 2011

It almost seems inevitable that a couple of favored teams happen to under-perform each week, and then ultimately get defeated by an inferior opponent.

No sport is an exception, and no NFL team can say it's never happened to them.

In Week 3, there are for sure to be some great games regardless of the outcome, but here are two favorites who will be distraught when the game-clock strikes triple zero.

Dallas Cowboys (Favorite) vs Washington Redskins (Underdog) -5

Even though the Cowboys have some injury issues coming into the Monday night game, they are still favored over their NFC East rival and 2-0 Washington Redskins.

It's the home-opener for Dallas and the Redskins' first road game of the year, so it's safe to say that both still have a lot to prove.

That being said, the Redskins aren't dealing with nearly the extent of injuries as Dallas is, and they are playing with a lot more confidence than expected.

QB Rex Grossman has been respectable thus far, RB Tim Hightower is gradually becoming a solid NFL RB, and the defense is proving to be a lot better than given credit for.

As for Dallas, they bounced back in a big way in Week 2 in San Fran after a sad fourth-quarter performance in New York.

QB Tony Romo displayed an unprecedented amount of toughness, and the Cowboys ultimately got win No. 1.

However, the Redskins win a close defensive battle in Week 3, because although Dallas is still more talented, Washington is beginning to come together as the odds are consistently against them.

They've played more as a team than Dallas has through the first two weeks, and that shows on Monday night.

Philadelphia Eagles (Favorite) vs New York Giants (Underdog) -7

Yes this is all about the NFC East, and the reason is because through two weeks of pro football, it's been arguably the most level competition of any division.

And to make this game even more interesting, both New York and Philly are dealing with some concerning injuries (QB Mike Vick, and WR Mario Manningham most notably) heading into their Week 3 matchup.

Therefore, expect both teams to feed their RBs a heavy dose of carries and it's going to be an old-fashioned ground and pound in The City of Brotherly Love.

With QB Mike Vick not at 100 percent even if he plays, the Eagles need to establish a run-game because last week New York got Justin Tuck back.

As for the Giants, WR Dominek Hixon is out with an ACL injury, and with Mario Manningham being questionable, RB Ahmad Bradshaw will be more responsible for moving the chains.

That in turn, is advantage New York as they are more of a running team than Philly, and the Giants front seven is better in being ranked No. 3 in rush D compared to No. 30 of Philadelphia.

In the end, New York takes the victory as they are the more effective rushing offense.
