Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Fight Proves Ortiz Doesn't Have Head to Be Elite Fighter
Victor Ortiz was looking for a way out.
Amidst the rumblings that Floyd Mayweather delivered a cheap shot, we forget that Victor Ortiz started a series of events that culminated with him dropping his gloves and receiving the wrath of a Mayweather knockout blow.
There is a vast difference between wanting to fight Money May and actually stepping in the ring with him. The latter has been a fool's errand for past fighters that thought they could match the speed and precision of one of the best in boxing.
The stark reality hits you the minute Mayweather ducks one of your best punches and releases a flurry of counters that can't be followed by the human eye. Standing in the ring, Ortiz must have thought, "This guy is better than me."
This is a blow to the psyche that Ortiz has suffered before. He was taken to the limit by Marcos Maidana, only to quit in the ring after taking too many knocks to the head.
From one boxing faux pas to another. Ortiz broke another rule on Saturday. He dropped his hands, leaving himself defenseless in the ring.
You never know when the referee is going to return action to the fight. As a boxer, you must be on guard at all times. That is, if you want to win.
Joe Cortez, the referee of the fight, offered up his assessment of the headbutt moment. It is far more telling than anything I have heard to date:
""
""All week, I had been warned about Mayweather being dirty. Victor's people kept telling me to watch out for this and that. And then Victor did that. He is such a nice kid. It was so out of character.""
This clean fighter went dirty. Why?
It is so simple yet so hard to say about a fighter that has been so much. Went thrust into a corner, Ortiz did the last thing he could to get over on Mayweather.
He knew he couldn't beat him in a fair fight, so he went rogue. It was the last ditch effort of a desperate man.
Ortiz was looking for anything to end the fight. A headbutt turned into an awkward hug which begot an Ortiz that lost focus of the one man he should have always had an eye on—Floyd Mayweather.
Ortiz was simply desperate. Fighting a boxer with the flurry and acumen of Mayweather will do that to you. We can now dismiss the claims that Ortiz will be anything more than a very good fighter.
He just doesn't have the head for this sport.
