Penn State Football: Paterno's Indecision at Quarterback Continues to Infuriate

Kevin McGuireSep 21, 2011

Enough already, Joe. Pick a guy.

Any guy. Rob Bolden. Matt McGloin. At this point, it doesn't matter, but to continue dragging out the indecision is starting to get to the point of ridiculousness, and it is doing a great disservice to your team. Surely you don't need me to point this out to you. After all, you have been a head coach at Penn State for longer than I have been alive, and I respect you for that. Everyone can respect that. But as I said last week, your team and the fans do not deserve to watch this play out any more.

"Well, we're taking every game one at a time," Paterno said on Tuesday. "I think we've got to just try to get better as a football team each game we play. We've got a team with a good football tradition, at times have been one of the better football teams in the country."

Those times are in the past, and right now, it can be difficult to seeing that proud tradition add another couple of memories to the history this season so long as the quarterback carousel is in operation. The inability to find some consistency and an identity on offense will continue until a final call is made. You are 84 years old, and the way this is all coming off is that you are afraid to break the hearts of a couple of kids in their late teens or early 20's. And why?

"Maybe I'm making a mistake in not deciding," Paterno said. "I'm not real comfortable having two quarterbacks. But I also wouldn't be comfortable if I did something that I felt ended up being unfair to one."

"I think both those kids are so close, and both those kids deserve to play."

Zero passing touchdowns this season on offense, regardless of the quarterback, might suggest that neither deserve to play, but one of them has to moving forward. Penn State is one of six teams in the country without a single touchdown pass. Only one other program form an AQ conference can say that: Oregon State.

"But I want to be fair," Paterno urges. "I said one thing I want to do is I want to be fair to them.  I want to be fair to the team."

You might want to argue that it is not fair to the team to publicly hold a competition for the most important position on the field, and you might be right, as the team has played three games.

"So I have a dilemma."

Everybody following this program does, Joe. Sadly, the indecision about this all is starting to turn some of Paterno's most loyal followers against him. When the masses really start to turn on Paterno, you know there are some ruffled feathers in the flock.
