Mayweather vs. Ortiz: KO Victory Proves Mayweather Superior to Pacquiao

Adam WellsSep 20, 2011

Before knocking out Victor Ortiz on Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather’s reputation had taken a huge hit. But after that knockout victory, Mayweather proved that he still belongs in the conversation with Manny Pacquiao as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

When Mayweather took a self-imposed 16-month leave of absence from boxing, he not only lost his spot on top of many pound-for-pound fighters lists, but was removed from them altogether because you can’t keep a fighter on the list who has not fought in the last 12 months.

But there is no doubt that he is still one of, if not the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing.

It is easy to dismiss Mayweather because of his personality and confrontational attitude, but you can’t argue with what he does when he steps into a boxing ring.

Mayweather has a perfect record (42-0) and he has not come close to losing a fight in his career.

Pacquiao is the exact opposite of Mayweather when you compare their personalities inside and outside the ring. He is outgoing, well spoken, immensely likable and a role model that kids can look up to. He is a politician who wants to make a difference in the world.

Inside the ring, Pacquiao is just as dangerous as Mayweather. He has a career record of 53-3-2 and has not lost a fight since 2005. He is the first boxer to win championships in eight different weight classes, and he has become the biggest star in the sport.

Both men have passionate fans that will defend them until they are blue in the face. They will give you 1,001 reasons why one is better than the other. But the fact of the matter is there is no way to discern between these two legendary boxers.

They have both fought and defeated some of the best boxers in the world throughout their careers, and the only thing that remains left is for them to fight each other.

Regardless of whether or not we see that super fight, Mayweather proved that he is still in the same league as Pacquiao, and should be ranked ahead of Pacquiao on the pound-for-pound lists.

Pacquiao has been given the respect of the fans and media because he is the “good guy.”

Mayweather has had to earn all of his fans because he is not likable in any way, shape or form. In fact, you could make a case that people just tune in to see him lose.

But regardless of how we feel about both of these fighters personally, it is impossible to deny that Mayweather and Pacquiao are the two best boxers in the world today.

The only real question is who you put first on your list. Given Mayweather’s unblemished record, it is hard not to put him ahead of Pacquiao.
