Mayweather vs. Ortiz Cheap Shot: How Famous KO Will Affect Boxing
Now that plenty of time has passed since the ugly finishing move Floyd Mayweather used on Victor Ortiz last Saturday night, the pain it caused hasn’t ceased.
There is no one in this world that can say Ortiz didn’t deserve to have a point deducted for his blatant headbutt, but to say that Mayweather was in the right for sucker punching Ortiz while he was waiting for the OK to start fighting again is just silly.
The fight was turning into a slugfest. Ortiz had already won the second round and was on his way to tying the fourth round (one that I had him winning) when the sneak attack happened.
While it is appalling to see boxing turn into such a circus, what Mayweather did was technically legal and should not be punished.
The problem with "unwritten" rules, like the one Floyd Mayweather broke, is that there is no way to enforce them. As much as that move was in bad taste, there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do about it.
Boxing needs to look hard at the rule books and find a way to keep this from happening again in the future. Fans were ripped off for their $60, and the least the sport can do is incorporate a few rules to favor the fans for once.
The sport of boxing has been dying for years, but the fact that they haven’t been falling over themselves to make it more fan-friendly means they really don’t care.
These promoters just see dollar signs, and will throw quality to the wolves if it means a hefty payout for all parties involved.
The only lesson this fight taught fans of the sport is that, if Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather don’t fight, boxing is dead.
